Why children need pets

Recommended Posts

I feel so fortunate to have been brought up surrounded by animals. We didn't have a dog until I was 11 - my parents had had dogs in the past but when they lost a dog when my brothers were small, they decided to concentrate on the human pets for a while and leave keeping dogs until they retired. However I grew up with an assortment of cats (most of whom turned up at the house and refused to leave), various mice, hamsters, stick insects, fish, guinea pigs and a tortoise. Most photos of me as a little one also feature an animal somewhere - my personal favourite is a photo of me spark out on a bean bag (aged 2/3ish) surrounded by cats  My life was finally made complete when we eventually got a dog (my pester power succeeded  ) and I've never been without one since. My life has been enriched by growing up around animals - I can't imagine how dry an animal-less childhood must be!
