kkara
I am an A-level Product Design student. My sister owns ducks and therefore, for my coursework I have made a cheap, temporary nesting house designed to hold 1 duck and her nest/ brood. It is made from Corriflute (the plastic version of corrugated card) and is intended for self assembly which can easily be done with no specialist tools. The house is secure to the ground using guy lines and flat packs when not in use. Any comments you may have, (good or bad!) would be extremely helpful. If you have any questions, please ask! I would probably sell the house at around £30-40 which is higher than intended but still a lot cheaper than many of the other houses on the market. Also, I need to backtrack slightly on my coursework so here are some questions intended for the start of the project. Again, I would be very grateful for any help. 1) How much would you be willing to pay for a 1 duck & 4 duckling capacity nesting house? 2) Have you encountered any problems with the duck houses currently available on the market? 3) What do you look for when buying a duck house? 4) Have you attempted to make your own house? If yes, what did you need to consider and what problems did you have? 5) Do you have any other comments which I may find helpful? Thank You K Kara There are photos of the house here: http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/877913/building-a-duck-house#post_13342295
Chortle Chook
Hello Kkara - I think your duck house is very jolly and the price is very good, well, if I'm honest I'd consider it to be on the low side. However the ratio of floor space to head hight looks not quite right to me. I know the Mummy duck might need some head hight, especially if she was a runner duck, but I would think the brood might need more floor space To answer your questions 1) How much would you be willing to pay for a 1 duck & 4 duckling capacity nesting house? Well I paid more than twice that for my Flyte so Fancy Puddle Duck House 2) Have you encountered any problems with the duck houses currently available on the market? Mine works very well for 2 little call ducks and I think I'd be able to get in 2 more but it would not be high enough for larger ducks. There are however other models available from Flyte so Fancy. The only issue I could forsee is that if I was to have 4 ducks then the door might not be large enough as they all like to pile out at once. They don't file out, nice and neatly, like chickens. 3) What do you look for when buying a duck house? Enough room for the ducks I have to settle down in at night. Fox proof - it should keep my ducks nice and safe Rain and Wind proof - it should not blow away and the rain should not get in and make the nesting material all soggy Ducks should be able to get in easily. They are funny beings and don't seem to do steps or high ramps. Prettyness - the design does count for me as I like things in my garden to look nice 4) Have you attempted to make your own house? If yes, what did you need to consider and what problems did you have? No 5) Do you have any other comments which I may find helpful? Only that the breed of duck might make a difference e.g Call Duck vs Runner Duck vs Muscovy duck Good luck with your project
