Please help! Bloody lash

Recommended Posts

As some of you know, my Amber has been recovering from a fungal infection in her liver for a couple of months now and is doing really well - a few weeks ago she laid a few 'lashes' and then stopped. It didn't bothered me because as long as she was OK that all that matters.

This morning I went to bring her out into her run and I found a pool of blood next to a lash - the blood texture is that of yolk and there's something else semi solid that's purplish. I was really shocked and thought maybe someone could help - you've all been so helpful over the last few months and I am very grateful!

The hen is doing OK otherwise, last few days she's been following me round the garden and look very sprightly - she's showing no signs of being bad right now and seems to be acting normal.

Here's a photo (graphic bloody photo):

Maybe another trip to the vets?

I've seen a whole shed oviduct twice Mrs_B. Which is a blood covered lash. This looks different. There is a lash on the left and what looks like a tumour? on the right with blood. It may be the ovary? She shold be fine if the bleeding stops internally, so watch the poos. I don't know what the vet will be able to do?

Thanks, Beantree. I can't find anything like this online myself - tried various searches. I think you're right that it could be a tumour or an ovary. Just hoping this hasn't caused any other problems inside for her.

I will keep an eye out, hopefully she'll be OK as she seems to be acting normal and there's nothing odd about her vent or belly when I checked her over.

Thanks again!

Hi Mrs B,

My Black Rock, Edna, had a very similar experience about three weeks ago. She laid something in the run that included a bright yellow yolk, but also what I can only describe as chopped liver. There was a lot of viscous blood and tissue (sorry, bit graphic). I expected the worse, but she carried on as if nothing had happened. She's carried on laying.

I'd keep an eye on your girlie, but I wouldn't worry too much if she seems okay in herself. Good luck.

Thank you, Jen the Hen - apologies it's taken me so long to reply!

Update - Our Amber wasn't right for a few days after this sample, she went off food and I was very worried. So I did contact the vet who previously suggested a hormone implant for her because she was laying several lashes not too long ago (and eggs without any shell). I opted to go for this as I suspected something wasn't right and looking at her history I thought it was the right thing to do. A few days after she was off and seemed to not like me too much but woke up one day and she looked amazing and seemed very confident. I have even introduced her back into her original flock after a couple of months being apart and she was good enough to put herself back under the top hen (any other attempts made her very depressed so I had to remove her). The fungal treatment is ongoing for a few weeks as she's coming off this very slowly just in case of a flare up, but otherwise all is looking good and I won't have to worry about what she's going to lay next (for a while anyway!) :) Fingers crossed it's all OK from now on...

Beantree - the vet saw my photo and thought the same as you, though wasn't 100% if the small purple part was and even suggested a deformed egg as well as it being maybe an ovary/tumour.
