Guest
A while ago I had problems with an egg eater, the problem seemed to clear up, although all the usual tricks did not have any effect. My egg count has dropped drastically but I put that down to the moult but this morning I saw an egg shell being chased around the run by the whole flock. It was a proper egg shell not a softy. Obviously I do not want this habit to spread through the flock. Has anyone here ever culled a hen because of egg eating? While my hens are pets I did get them mostly for eggs and while I am happy for the older girls to have a long retirement with me (most of my girls are now over 4 years old) I am not happy to have a naughty madam teaching the rest bad habits and eating my breakfast. I guess really I am after reassurance that I am not an evil woman if I do cull the bad hen.
Olly
Not at all- egg eating is a very hard habit to break, and it's not as if it is just her eggs - the habit can spread and all the eggs can be damaged even if not all eaten. When I mentioned to a farmng friend that I'd had a few pecked eggshells his response was immediate and unambiguous - if it was his he'd cull it. Obviously it's worth trying all the usual tricks, and you need to be sure which hen is the culprit, but if the eggs are your main focus then that's nothing to feel guilty about.
