WIR question - sorry urgent

Recommended Posts

Sorry I bought a purpose built run. I did buy some mesh from B&Q but found it flimsy and just used it to fence off areas to keep hens off veggies.

I seem to think weldmesh should be 18 gauge but hopefully someone who knows for sure can give you better advice than me.

I know that most people tend to buy from Hillsofdevon so maybe a look at their website would help.

Just checked the details on my run, it has 19 gauge weldmesh with 1"x1" squares

Hope that helps a little

Fox Proof Chicken Fencing

Galvanised welded wire mesh 2.0" x 2.0" x 2.50 mm diameter . if fitted properly is Ideal for fox proofing the perimeter of chicken runs. the mesh needs to be a minimum of 72" high and sunk 18" into the ground. A 18"-24" wide mesh skirt securely attached to the base of the fence (with thick cable ties or wire) is an alternative to digging a trench.

You need a small mesh that the chickens can't get their heads through and a strong gauge. 20swg is 1mm wire, 18swg is 1.2mm wire and 16swg is 1.6mm wire from memory. We had 19swg chicken wire torn through. Point about the hole size for the bottom 18" is that with foxes hunting in pairs, one will scare the chickens to the other side of the run and the other will wait silently then bite their heads off. I've witnessed that happen.

Hot dip galvanised after manufacture for best corrosion protection. There is some cheap stuff around which says it is hot dip galvanised but that is before welding it all together. Our last roll has rusted badly after just two years. The first we bought 6 years ago is fine.
