Twiglet
This is a strange sort of problem, one I've not seen discussed on the forum but hoping someone can explain..... a bit of background first.... Had 2 new girls & cube 17th July, since then old 2 girls stoppd laying for no apparent reason. Lots of aggro between new & old, now thankfully, all settled. Update, One of the old pair has gone into serious moult so we think that's the explanation lack of eggs there. The new ones have just started to lay tiny ones about the size of a quails egg (who mentioned Martin ) but are cute all the same. Now the big question... the other one of the old girls also came back into lay about 10 days ago and we've had about 7 eggs so far BUT, they taste funny, when you break them, they look fine but the white of the egg is very very watery it doesn't have that "gel" bit around the yolk like the others. I have cooked them and eaten them with no adverse effects. But they definately taste very odd and the white, when cooked tastes sort of powdery not rubbery if you understand me. To be honest, i've broken a couple of the first ones to look at them and then ditched them in case it was something in her system that affected the first few but this is a recent one today that I've tried. Any ideas anyone? Apart from using them for baking, would you continue to eat them? Wierd
Charlottechicken
I think this has happened to me, but as my hens are now laying few and far between, I haven't actually had an egg myself for a couple of weeks. I sell a box of four eggs each week to the same neighbour who reported a couple of weeks ago that all of the eggs had an extremely runny white, and when the eggs hit the frying pan, the yolk also broke up. He didn't like the look of any of them so binned them all (of course he was given next weeks eggs free). My hens have also been moulting for months now, they started in March/April, I think the gingernut rangers are now in retirement, but Bossy is still laying 4 or 5 eggs a week. I don't think I would eat them if they taste funny
