Advice on Breeds

Recommended Posts

 Ooops sorry!

Edited to add - one small birdie can be shoved out a bit, so if you do keep to bantam sizes. It was OK when we had 3 pekins and 3 bigguns. It all went a bit awry when we were left with just one little'un. Although one of the pekins was always with our cuckoo maran - an odd couple indeed!

Mmm luvachicken. You're not trying to sway the vote at all are you. I have to say that the 2 Silkie crosses that I've got are absolutely lovely. One is silkie (dad) x GNR the othe is is crossed with a welsummer. God only knows how he reached  . Anyway they lay gorgeous eggs, huge yolks for little eggs. They also both have a great temperament. The Pekin is beautiful, but very much keeps herself to herself. Other than when I've got treats. She loves me best then :D

We started with Orpingtons as Valkyrie. Yes they do get big and fat and are a real handful to pick up. Problem is their wings are well forward of their centre of gravity, so when you pick them up for balance their wings are forward of your arms. Consequently they flap about quite easily, so they are best picked up backwards. Definitely not a breed for the inexperienced.

We have Wyandottes. Reasonable quantity layers of medium sized eggs, but they are very pretty. They do need a lot of space to avoid behavioural problems in our experience. I would suggest a minimum of 5m2 each.
