PixieDust
I know this has probably been discussed before, but when my girls came, Winnie had a big comb and she had a black bit at the top of one of the spikes. It seemed to eventually fall off. I assumed it was a bit of frostbite from before she arrived. However all of their combs have now got a few black dots on the end bits and Winnie has a few battle scars from Pixie. We have no snow and the temps are due to drop to -1 degrees C but we are quite rural and have often been the coldest, (or hottest place), in the country, and we are down south. So, a -1 could be a -4 or -5. My question is thus: At what temperature can they get frostbite on their combs whilst asleep in the coop? And should I be putting some Vaseline on them over the next few nights?
mullethunter
Are you sure they're not scabs?
PixieDust
Don't honestly know. Never having experienced it I could imagine most of Winnie ' s are but not sure about the ones on the tips.
Luvachicken
Are you sure they're not scabs? I was wondering that too.

Redwing
I would say they are scabs, this is typical of damage caused by either fighting or damage in other ways (ie pushing up against wire, rubbing on drinker etc)
