Sneezing ex-batt

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am new to chicken keeping and took home my first two ladies last Sunday.

They were both in much better condition than I expected, and they have settled In very quickly. We have had an egg every day since they have arrived. I have noticed that one of them (actually the one with fewest feathers) sneezes occasionally. There is no nasal discharge, no laboured breathing, her eyes look bright, she is eating and drinking energetically, and currently scratching her way to China at the bottom of the run.

Should I be worried?

Their run is sat on bark clippings, and I'm using straw in their nest box, is this perhaps the issue?

I'm currently only feeding them on mash, I've tried offering lettuce, broccoli, and cucumber, but they seem uninterested in treats at the moments. Is there a supplement that I should be giving them?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

It may be dust or mould spores that's irritating her Lilla? Straw is not recommended as bedding because the hollow stems can harbour red mite. I'd change that to dust extracted wood shavings and then make sure there is plenty of ventilation in the coop at night.

We've just had two newbies and they are both suffering from dust irritation. We think the breeder had them in a dusty shed over Winter. We are hoping it doesn't become a respiratory infection so are leaving the pop-hole open at night to be sure (Chinese import coop with no ventilation system).
