BeckyBoo
Hi there our Speckledy (imaginatively named Speckle ) has been broody for a fortnight, which is not a problem in itself. We chuck her out regularly to make sure she eats and drinks and I was just going to let her get on with it. But, it's coincided with a complete drop in egg production by all the others. We have 7 hens, Bertie doesn't lay for some inexplicable reason - laid three weeks ago then obviously thinks she's done her bit! (so much for a prolific layer!) but that still leaves 5 plus a broody. We were on 4 or 5 eggs a day, now we're down to one or two. Is this a coincidence? I've checked the garden as they free range most of most days and can't find any hidden stashes. In a couple of days things will calm down here and if she's still like it I'm getting the cat box out and she can cool off in there! She's a grumpy old bag altho she looks beautiful all puffed up when we throw her kicking and growling into the garden every day! The Pearsons
Toast is broody but Chips s still laying. The problem is that Toast takes the egg that Chips laid and adds it to her clutch....... Luckily she is docile and dozy so it isn't a problme fishing out the fresh egg. I was proud of myself for marking the possible fertile eggs!!!!! puffball
Is Speckeldy sitting in the place where the others like to lay? If so they can sometimes go on strike until you move the broody hen to her own run. (Broody hens that are hatching chicks should have a seperate bit like a rabbit hutch. I read that in a book but I can't remember the reason for it. Well anyway try to move Speckeldy to her own 'run' before the chicks arrive!) BeckyBoo
Thanks,. thing is she's not sitting on anything, she hasn't laid for days and we have no cockerel anyway! It's been really hectic here so have just let her get on with it, after tomorrow am planning on putting her in the "cooler" to see if that cures the problem!
