Mar1a
What do your feathered friends like for their treats? Worming week finished yesterday so today I'm putting some turf in their run and will give them some corn and a few grapes later on. Grapes are like crack cocaine to my girls They like cabbage and lettuce but don't like banana. They love grass and worms but not slugs or big snails. I'm after some ideas what else to give them
Olly
I don't buy treats. Apart from a handful of corn (which is sweepings from a grain silo, donated by a farming contact) I give mine veg peelings, leftovers if they're suitable and manky veg that have been forgotten in the fridge. They also love dandelion leaves and chickweed, and a friend with an allotment gives me 'bolted' vegetables which I hang up for them.
Cat tails
Broccoli is an absolute favorite. But don't buy it as often. They begin their day with a hand of mixed grain tossed on the paving and some sliced endive. I have little spoiled brats that will demand food in the morning, very loudly. So they get it, to keep the neighbours happy. The ready shredded endive in a bag is currently cheaper than a whole head in the supermarkets. It's making me lazy! mullethunter
Mine have turf occasionally too. Also broccoli / cabbage / carrots that are a bit past human consumption. The only things I ever buy especially are mealworms when they're half price (I guess they have a box a month) and the occasional corn cob. Mar1a
Thank you lovelies that's given me a few ideas They were over the moon with their turf strips today. I've never known them to be so quiet!
Cat tails
I grow a few broccoli plants especially for my chickens. They love the leaves too, not only the flowers. Very rewarding plant too, to have in your garden. I just removed mine yesterday and they were last years plants, still in full bloom all way through winter. I would have kept them, but they had to make way for a Peony. Edit: they didn't have any leaves anymore, which were not only eaten by the chickens, but also the caterpillars. Still the plants went on and on and kept producing flowers!
Chickabee
I gave mine an old pomegranate the other day. They loved it. They usually just get left over, or old veg. Califlower leaves are much appreciated. Sunflower seeds and a little mixed corn
