miller30
How old are they now? Yes is looking like you possibly only have one girl but saying that her little wattles are rather red
mimi5
I forgot to say they are 4 weeks (yesterday) although I have to say they seem more advanced and bigger!!! Could the warm weather and sunshine have accelerated their growth? Also their combs were coloured up as they gave me the run around. They look a lot less pink at times, especially the girl looking one. Oh dear 1 girl and that's a possibly I have a plan for re-homing......but may have to ask my friend to cull some if I struggle This will most likely be my last hatch miller 30 I have a new worry this morning......one of the the chicks had a poo on him (big mottled boy, charming siblings!) and it had blood on it/in it. I haven't seen any others like this and immediately emptied the poo tray and checked the snowflake, none there either. Should I do something? I do have some coxoid and could re- treat them??? Not having the best of times am I?
miller30
Oh dear don't give up yet fingers crossed for the little girl but they shouldn't have any redness to their faces at 4 weeks but as you say much better if you see them in person and did you coxoid them for the full 7 days with no other water to drink ? Beantree
Rather than coxoid I would recommend using Avipro Avian and let them build natural immunity Mimi5. Apparent blood in the poo may simply be shed intestinal lining. We had one this morning and ours are also 4 weeks old.
mimi5
Thanks miller30 and Beantree I did give them the coxoid for 7 days and then aprivo plus for a further 7 days They do seem more advanced than my last hatch....but that was 3 years ago I tried to find my pics of that hatch, but that mobile phone died and so did the computer we had at the time! But I do remember that the girls seemed to have chick like heads in comparison to the boys with their red head gear Yes, I did mean to mention I have already seen shed gut lining from this group, but it looks more "orangey" red than red. But they do all seem fine Feeling really blue Let's hope I do have one girl
miller30
In that case if it's more orange no I wouldnt dose them again with coxoid as it is quite harsh on the gut try not to let it get you down about boys I know it's a bummer wait until they are 6 weeks and then you will know for deffo on the girl leanne
mimi5
So I've already got on the case for re-homing the boys!!! Found a couple of places that offer re-homing services and take boys. E-mailed and waiting for replies. I have been watching them and the chick I have felt is a girl is usually doing her own thing, her comb isn't usually coloured up but they did give me the run around to get those pics and I had to do it over 2 days as they were screaming and making mum agitated, she in turn pecking me like in the broody days I have found somebody fairly local who has pekin chicks the same age, so probably get her a couple of friends to grow on with once mum leaves the chicks and separate the boys in to the ark while I try and re-home them I am tempted to keep the mottled boy (hes my fav and 1st hatched) But will 2 boys crowing be madness??? Also means running 2 pens......
sarabb4
Good luck Mimi - I hope one is a girl! I thought possibly from the pics there maybe 2 girls.. But I am certainly no expert! My lone chick is now 2 weeks... Currently (fingers crossed very tight)looking like a hen... But maybe it's far too early to tell! I wonder if you could please message me the rehoming organisations you have found. I will probably need to rehome Ron (not to mention the chick -tho that might be a dispatch situation).. I do have a possible home for Ron - but I'd like to have more than one option... tIA . X
mimi5
So probably asking miller30 (leanne ) My 5 remaining boy chicks all very boyish (fight club) But I am still unsure about 2 of the chicks I thought might be girls. They are quieter and just potter around, their combs haven't gotten any more pink and their tails are different to the boys.......does that make any sense??? The boys tails are higher and the 2 I hope might be girls are lower, giving them a lower slung look......What do you think? They all seem fine and are growing at an amazing rate I've already seen a couple of "baby" feathers shed in the run. I do have a temporary home for all the boys, with a lady who will re-home them on. She sells hybrids, but takes in unwanted cockerels and was recommended to me by another chicken keeper She can't take them till they're 12 weeks so there's time to find out about how many boys in the end But I would love to have a girl or 2, Martha their mum is a lovely hen She has been doing a great job Martha doesn't seem to be showing any signs of leaving her chicks....they will be 6 weeks this weekend. Should I wait for her to leave or remove her?? My last 2 broodies both wanted to leave their chicks bang on 6 weeks
sjp
I leave my broodies to make the move away from the chicks I've had them walk away at six weeks old right up to 12-14 weeks old. the one that leaves them at 6 weeks the next clutch did the same but the next night went back to them and stayed another 3 weeks
miller30
Hi yes unless your in a hurry to split them up I would just leave them with your broody she will tell you if she's fed up and I don't bother with tails etc I just sex by comb and wattles or sometimes I can just tell lol do you have any new pics out of my first broody batch I had at about same time as you I can tell I have 2 of each
mimi5
do you have any new pics Will try and get some So tonight I got a surprise in the classic nest box ....an egg Ah Martha laid me an egg So, should she leave the chicks as she is laying again?? She is still very protective of her babies
miller30
No don't worry doesn't mean she's ready to leave my broody starting laying again when chicks were 4 weeks she still with them I find it funny they all sit in the corner with her while she lays
mimi5
Ok so no rush. But last night was the first night that they weren't all snuggled up with mum in the coop at bedtime.......so maybe she is getting ready to leave them. Slowly I am beginning to believe that the 7 left are all boys But at least I have found somebody to take them. So sad as I won't hatch again and will have none of Martha's children, she is a lovely hen and beautiful too!!! Would you believe it the biggest boy (mottled) did a squeaky crow as he came this morning Not 6 weeks till tomorrow. Roll on 12 weeks ......bit worried if they all start up I am going to a pekin breeder in Newmarket tomorrow. I was going to get some 6 week chicks to be grown on with the girl, but think I may look at his older stock as I don't think I need youngsters. I will see his 6 week girls and be able to gauge if my only possible girl looks anything like them (other possible getting a pink face I noticed today, even though it still has a very small comb) Ah well new girls........decisions, decisions Still feel gutted by an all boy hatch
miller30
Lol on the little crow I expect by 12 weeks they will all be crowing mine are if you do go and look at New girls don't let this hatch make you rush any decisions 6 weeks is still young to be outside as chilly at night so that's one thing to think about just go with your gut feeling if your not sure walk away I don't sell my growers until 10 weeks min but that's just me have fun and let us know how you get on
