Question re iTunes idiocy

Recommended Posts

The background: My laptop hard drive was getting too full, so I relocated all the iTunes media files over to a hardwired external drive and pointed iTunes to the new library. Now every time I restart iTunes, it defaults back to the old location.. I reset it to the new folder, and it still goes back to the default folder

Grrrrr

Any ideas/clever fixes?

It is a bit long winded, but:

Open iTunes.

Choose Edit > Preferences.

Click the Advanced tab.

Make sure that there's a check the box next to "Keep iTunes Media folder organized."

Click OK.

From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.

Click the Advanced tab in the Preferences window.

Click the Change button in the iTunes Media folder location pane.

In the Change Media Folder Location window that appears, navigate to the location where you would like your new Media folder to be created.

In Windows Vista and later, click the triangles next to the folders and drives to navigate. In Windows XP, click the plus signs next to the folders and drives to navigate. By default, the iTunes Media folder is located in the folder that contains your iTunes library files.

Click the New Folder button in the Change Media Folder Location window.

Enter the name of the new iTunes Media folder.

Click OK in the Change Media Folder Location window. Click OK in the Advanced window.

Choose File > Library > Organize Library.

A message will pop up. Click the box next to "Consolidate files" so that there's a check in it. Then click OK.

This action copies all of your music and other media files to the new location. There must be enough hard disk space available to copy all of your files.

After the folder has been copied, locate your original iTunes Media folder, and drag it to the Recycle Bin. Don't remove the iTunes Library files that might be in the same location as the iTunes Media folder.

Quit and then reopen iTunes.

Right, Geoid

I am looking at it now - I had already moved the files over to the new location, but have followed all your other suggestions. I now have iTunes pointing at the right folder, but the only music showing up on iTunes are 3 tracks which I have never heard of! I want to repopulate my iTunes with the music in said folder - do I now need to go (again) through the laborious process of copying them all across?
