Joan and Roy are home

Recommended Posts

Just a little post mainly for my own amusement because I'm somewhat excited. My first two hybrids, Joan and Roy, came home this morning. They're nicely secured in their Go and we're somewhat reluctant to come out into the run initially but now they're scratching around like they've never lived anywhere else.

Ps. We're not telling Roy she has a boys name just in case she takes to trying to crow

Err... So the first meeting with the neighbours cat didn't go so well. Thankfully very separate but lots of noise from the girls (or one of them at least) and why the didn't think to hide in the coop I have no idea. The cat is fixated :(

Congrats on getting your girls!

Just get a squirt gun for the cat. Or a bucket of water. Cats are not stupid and will put two and two together. If chickens means getting wet, he/she won't bother anymore.

But in future when free ranging (wouldn't do that the first week) just make sure you keep an eye out.

I've just seen a brilliant video Cosmo. Little girl is digging a huge hole in the lawn to bury her pet goldfish. Neighbour says, "isn't that a rather large hole for a goldfish". "No, because it's inside your ******* cat!!!!!"

Apologies, too much wine. Very important you keep the neighbours cat well away and reduce the stress level of your girls to a minimum at this stage. Cat Tails' suggestion is a good one, but my preference would be for a 'super soaker'. Be aware chickens hate being sprayed so choose the angles carefully.

Thanks. Bucket of water is on standby I was so worried while I was at work yesterday but all was quiet when I got home and the girls settled very well last night and took themselves to bed much earlier than they did the day before.

Glad it has made you chuckle. They are named after two very dear neighbours of mine from my childhood known as Aunty Joan and Uncle Roy, who have now sadly passed away. It seemed somewhat fitting to name my girls after them because they always had chickens after they moved from next door to a small holding.

I too have an Auntie Joan and an Uncle Roy.

They were very wealthy and owned an electrical shop.

Beantree I love your joke about the little girl digging the hole :lol:

So pleased you have some chickens in your life Cosmo.

They are one of the best things ever and I don't imagine you will just have 2 for long
