Grandmashazzie
I am down now to one ex batt. Poor Elvis Costello was found dead on the floor of the coop this am.Sha had been fine yesterday but must have felt unwell as they usually roost in the WIR. She must have gone to the coop to die.My girls would have been 3 years free in Sept, the remains of my first lot of 10 hens. Last one Number Five is decidedly unhappy, I have never heard her be so vocal. RIP Elvis.
Beantree
Very sorry to hear that Grandmashazzie. Of course you can't keep just one hen because chances are she will pine away quite quickly, so what are your plans? Our neighbour was in a similar situation, with foxes having taken all the flock but her. She slowly stopped talking then eating and by the time she was given company she was in a really bad way. She did however snap out of her depression after about a week. and is still around.
Purplemaniacs
Sorry to hear about Elvis. What a shock. Hens hide illness very well. She had a good time of freedom. Do you have any others as well as the one ex batt? Chrissie
Grandmashazzie
My signature needs updating! I have 10 others,an Amber Star,Bluebelle and Marans, then 2 Millefleur Pekins, 2 Silkies one black and one white and 2 laced Wyandottes. They all get on well but defiantly stick with their 'birth' family.
gavclojak
Ah I think we all misread the OP thinking you were down to your lone hen. So sorry for your Elvis but what a great age for an ex cage fighter bless her 'Elvis has left the building'........

She seemed happy and contented on her own just chatting to the others. Chrissie
mrsatroy
Very sorry to hear about Elvis - what agreat age she lived to. You can take comfort from the wonderful ife you gave her. I lost 2 of my ex-batts in the past few months after only getting them in November. They hide illness so well. Very hard to lose any girl.
