Luvachicken
I'm a bit of a weather geek I have two different weather stations in the garden and one has an anemometer on it. I also inherited a barometer and we have a Gallileo thermometer. I've been looking at the Storm glass things where the liquid inside is meant to do certain things depending on the weather. Pictures of them show some quite cool crystals and cloudy liquid or clear. I just wondered if anyone has one and if it works or if you'd spend the money on something else - like more chickens ? The one I've been looking at is tear drop shaped and more ornament like than the one looking like a sausage with writing on, although that was what I was after until I saw the other one. HarrisonFamily
We inherited the sausage shape one - it sits nexts to the window and does change but I am guessing the heating etc probably prevents it being accurate - as we inherited it we had no instructions we just kept it because it is cool -I would love to keep it outside and see if its more accurate but being glass and with a house full of children I am pretty sure it would not even last a day .... Alis girls
I think my dad has one - it has some teardrop shaped thingys in it. I have no idea how it works and I'm sure he doesnt either. I have a barometer which OH got me yrs ago. It is on hall wall - not all outer one. Its accurate at the moment as its on rain
Luvachicken
Thanks both Alis girls, I think the one you are describing of your dad's is a Galileo thermometer. The balls inside move up and down depending on temperature and you read the ball that is at the bottom of the collection at the top.
Valkyrie
I love those gadgets. But we did have a barometer for some time - it never worked properly. Our next door neighbour has a large barometer and it's quite accurate. I threw ours away a long time ago. Nowadays I watch the wind and the clouds. Not tried seaweed yet though. Luvachicken
A blob of seaweed would be cheaper
Valkyrie
Did you hear the storm in the middle of the night? Didn't see that one coming! But the weather thingies should have gone wooft! - right down low!!! Seaweed wouldn't do that!
Luvachicken
Did hear lots of hail or rain but someone at school mentioned thunder - I never heard any though. Think I will ask the birthday bunny for a storm glass anyway
