Solitary chicken - need advice

It's taken a bit of patience but I've finally got a second hand Cube Still ridiculously expensive but £495 for Cube plus 2m run seems to be he going rate on eBay, and is a substantial saving on a new one. I'm taking my mums Land Rover to pick it up tomorrow - I know the 'Cars an Eglu will fit in' says you can get it in a Fiesta, and I can get more in mine than you'd think, but I don't think I'll risk it!

 

I'm a bit overexcited but this is a long winded way of asking if anyone has Pekins who can manage with the standard ladder, or will I definitely need to modify it?

Glad you managed to get a cube. What colour did you get?

 

My three Pekin's manage the ladder just fine, quite funny watching them when they come down it, and hopping of the last step. They go up it with ease, much better than my hybrids.

Congratulations, I am sure you will love it. Although my pekins manage the ladder fine I have adapted it with some plastic trellis so the holes are not so big and also put a log at the bottom.

It's a green one. Faded and with rusty bits but looks in good working order. JUST managed to fit it all in the back of my mums Land Rover but it was a tight squeeze.

 

I think I'll put a log at the bottom and leave it at that and see how they get on.

Mine have an adapted ladder.

Gemma never got the hang of it 4 years ago and so it has always stayed so I couldn't actually say if the other pekins would manage it as they never got the chance.

Did you keep your old house ? Comes in handy for intros or keeping poorly ones separate.

Yes I'm keeping my Go. In the short term it'll make it easier to move the girls to my mums for when I'm away for 3 weeks in the summer.

 

Also they don't seem to have such a second hand value as the Cubes and Classics so I wouldn't get all that much for it.

Just spent an hour pressure washing and Virkon-ing my 'new' Cube. Looks much better now even if the outside colour bears almost no resemblance to the inside colour

 

How easy or otherwise is the Cube plus basic run to move on its wheels?

So far, so NOT good! Pekins are in bed and seem settled - but only because I put them there! The Wyandottes are bedding down on the ground underneath the Cube

 

Any tips?!

I would pop them all in at the boot end or through the egg port door, that way when they wake up in the morning they should remember where they got up from.

I'm sure they will soon get used to it

I put a perch across the run at door height - it worked! The Wyandottes obviously decided that would be better than the ground and when they got up there they went across it to the door and went straight in

 

The Wyandottes are in the nest box but I'll deal with that tomorrow
