mullethunter
So far I've only grown onions from sets. I've had real success once, and abject bolting failure once. Would you recommend seeds or sets? And if I go seeds, do I plant them now? I'm sure I remember my grandad planting something on eithe Christmas or New Year's Day and I have a feeling it was onions. sjp
personally I prefer seed especially for red onions as they don't bolt from seed also more variety from seed You only need to sow early if you want big onions for the show bench but nowadays big show onions are started late November at the latest to get the size. You start them this early they'll need heat till at least April 24 7 I'll start mine in March in a heat propagator. You should be able to start them February in Cornwall I must get on and order My seeds tomorrow

Valkyrie
I did have better success with seed than sets. Ailsa Craig is an old variety that worked really well for me. Having a bit of a time out - we are doing more spuds and a few early cropping things (when the swamp clears) with a view to moving house. GrannyTrish
Hubby always uses seeds and they haven't bolted. Good luck!
