Lesley
No, I haven't....... so I'd be interested to see how you get on. Have you checked out River Cottage? I'm sure it will be on there.
rachel19
I'll check river cottage - apparently there's a dustbin of potential cider vinegar in the garden too......his mum used to make this so he knows what he's doing.....so he says
rachel19
Well the cider is fizzing away to itself in the kitchen - yeast sugar and water have been added and it has a very gross looking 'scum' on the top of it It is starting to smell like cider now tho
Karen & co.
How are you making this? as we have quite a few apple trees in the garden that I'm sure would love to produce cider karen x
rachel19
We put all the fruit througha juicer and left it for a couple of days to settle. We've followed the instructions in a book called 'The new complete book of self-sufficiency' by john seymour - my mum loves it. Apparentl 4.5 - 6kg of apples make 4.5 litres of cider. We cut up all the fruit and put it through our juicer and left it to settle for a couple of days. Then (for 23 litres roughly) you add a few teaspoons of brewers yeast, 0.5-1kg of sugar (made into a syrup with 2 pints of boiling water) into it and leave for up to 3 weeks. That seems to be about it. It doesnt look so good at the moment due to the hirrid brown scum on the top but it does smell like cider now! Still got to wait a while before the taste test
