Chuckyegg
Hi One of my Bantams - Buttercup to be precise, seems to have short spikey feathers around her comb and neck - is this normal? she's eating fine and is as active and bonkers as normal... all the others have smooth feathers though I think she is a bit younger than them... Any ideas?
Karen & co.
Has she had a moult or lost some feathers?, and is now growing new ones, as they can look a little bit like a quill or paint brush before they develope properly karen x
Egluntyne
How old is she? Is she the same breed as the others? Is she squatting or laying? Can you show a picture of what you mean.
Chuckyegg
Hi I think that she is only about18-19 wks old, same breed as the others - Bantam Wyandotte ,not laying or even squatting, also not moulting either. She has always had a few little spikey bits around her beak but they seemed worse today - more of them and longer and around her comb and neck too. She is some way down the pecking order but not being bullied. I'll try and take a photo tomorrow and post it here. thanks for your replies
bridgy chooks
Hi Gabbi was a similar age to yours this time last year - I suspect (like happened with Gabbi) that they are new feathers growing through to warm her up ready for the winter - extra padding! In fact Gabbi's neck is like that now too - after her big moult - I don't think you realise how many feathers chickens have til they moult all over the garden It's nothing to worry about.
