firabbitduck
I know its probably not the best tome of year to go into growing veg but i just couldnt wait till next year! Ive dug up a small patch and planted a few seeds- broad beans, peas, spring onions, rocket and winter lettuce. Ive also got some onion sets coming from marshalls. Think ive got a bit carried away! I have bought a large cloche 1.8m by 1.5 which looks like a tent. The most green fingered thing ive ever done is grow cress on my windowsill so fingers crossed something will grow! Whats everyone else growing this time of year??
Christian
I have just planted garlic, swiss chard, spinach and curly kale which should all be fine over winter. If it is really cold for a few days then i cover the whole lot in fleece. Good luck
firabbitduck
Ive just recieved some garlic and onion sets in the post this morning so will hopefully get planting those today! Ive never tried swiss chard or curly kale, i cant say i even know what they look like!! Do you have them on salads?? Will the garlic and onions grow ok without cover or is it best to cover them?? Also i was wondering how long onions store?

Curly kale is like a very dark green cabbage, but loose leaf like lettuce. I will take some pictures for you. Garlic and onions will be fine uncovered over winter, and the onions should last a few months if the skins are really well dried. I have to admit that i have only grown summer onions and stored them over winter, not winter onions stored over summer.
