The Dogmother
Oh yuk! How I hate it when the children go back to school after a break.. especially with this warm weather encouraging the little varmints to breed! Rosie came back from school last night asking me to check her hair again (I did it on Sunday night), as lots of children in her class have lice. Sure enough...on a head that was clear just 4 days ago... a crop of big, mature lice...no eggs or babies, so obviously just come off someone's head!!!! I am strict about checking her hair at every hair wash, lice or not, so it's rather galling. I also dose her with Ovex at the end of each term to nuke any worms. Both the cats have Frontline Combi (so no fleas in the house either) and flea collars, but Biscuit came in covered in grass seeds and fleas last night. the collar should have repelled them ansd they would certainly die when they bit him because of the Frontline, but I took him outsidde and sprayed him too... poor baby. YUk, Yuk, yuk!!!! Be warned of the epidemic!
Guest
We had a real problem with fleas after the kittens were born - Tigger must have brought some in from outside, despite being regularly treated, and they must have jumped onto the carpet, and onto the poor kittens. Of course, it's difficult to treat kittens for fleas, as most products aren't suitable till after 8 weeks, so they had to be puffed everynight with diatom, and the whole house had to be sprayed to kill off anything residing in the carpets. *shudders* I hate the blumming things. The Dogmother
If you dose your big cats with either Frontline Combi, or Program, then any fleas will be rendered sterile and die when they bite the cats. You can get flea powders suitable for kittens.
Cinnamon
Its all just vile isn't it I must check the girls for head lice, as I haven't done it for a while. Unfortunatly being in secondary school makes no difference to the amount of times a year they come home with them. It makes me seeth that some parents just leave it ,therefore allowing their child to pass lice onto everyone else in the class Fleas - yes I Frontline Combi & flea collar too, but he does sometimes have one on him. He hates the spray with a vengence
Ziggy
Oh lice... I know that feeling... I am not squeamish or disgusted about them as some people at the school are (some talk like they are ready to chop their own head off in disgust), but of course we try our best to get rid of them, and yes every time we succeed, the success lasts a week or so and we have them back again... It really becomes a matter of just combing and treating as a matter of routine... The strange thing is, we never had them for years, despite regular warnings from the school my girls were always clear, until last year, and now we cant get rid of the things!! The Dogmother
The cats always get the odd one that jumps on them and I always see it before it dies and I hate them. Carpets make me sneeze, so I don't have any anyway... well except for one we inherited on the stairs, that has yet to be thrown out... I'm lucky that the original floor boards are in very good condition in my house, so I've stripped and polished them - good in the war against fleas too. Popcorn
Oh dear. Confession time. I am terrible at remembering to Frontline Molly and she doesn't wear a flea collar either. She gets the dose around 4 times a year, rather than the stated once a month. I've not spotted a flea, or felt one - touch wood. I've never checked Stefan for head lice either. What a terrible Mum I am
Ziggy
I only started doing regular checks on the girls when we actually got the lice problem, before that I only checked once in a blue moon, and as we were always clear I didn't rush to check again... I'm not good at remembering the cats' frontline... I need to get more organised with that... they get everything else, vaccination, insurance, all that stuff I remember and do on time, but the flea and worming I'm always very late at doing... The Dogmother
I struggled to remember it all too Ziggy, now I have a 6 weekly reminder in my Hotmail calendar to do the cats flea drops, Chooks lice drops, change the water filter and clean out the fish tank! Flea collars get done roughly every 4 months as do the chooks worming drops It's the only way I'd remember.

Glad I've got a friend there Ziggy! After reading this, I will do the nit check now. It's funny isn't it as I always remember vaccinations too, and it's not written down anywhere where it's obvious for me to see to remind me. I should write Frontline on the calendar at the start of every month.
