pgainey
Hi all out there, I have 2 GNR's supplied by OMLET that were delivered with our eglu. We were told that they were approx 18 weeks old. Cash soon developed redness to comb and face and has been laying for a while now daily (wow the eggs are great!) Tango is the same size but her facial features are much paler/smaller. With the weather changing and less daylight will she not mature until the spring? Being a highbrid I have read that the seasons effect their egg production less than true breeds. Does this mean her development should still occur during winter? I can't believe that Tango is much younger than Cash as they are the same size and delivered on the same date? Thank you all in advance, Paul.
Christian
Hi Paul. It is true that hybrid chickens are bred to lay, so once they are mature enough they should start laying. The seasons shouldn't really interfere with this. When my 3 were delivered in July 2006, Babs was the oldest and laid the next day, Laverne started laying a week later and Shirley didn't start for another 3 months. So it could be that they are different ages. edit - Shirley was also the biggest.
Laura & CTB
Hi Paul I got my two at the end of September last year at 18 weeks old and they finally laid 2 month later! After a few days off/on they went into full production all winter I'm sure Tango will catch up soon
Omletina Kyckling
Hi - I got my three Eglu girls on 11 September. Helga developed her comb and laid her first egg on 5 october and has laid every day since (with just one day off). Nina developed next and laid nearly three weeks later. At this point Jenny still looked very juvenile, with a pale pink, small comb. However, she started laying about a week later, but has missed a few days. So I wouldn't be surprised if there is a big difference. Jenny wasn't much smaller than the other two overall, but was obviously much younger. Tango will lay soon, when she's good and ready! Ain't Nobody Here
Hi - I got my three Eglu girls on 11 September. You're so lucky - I got my three 2 days before you and we've only had 10 eggs from one over a 2 wk period (then nothing) and nothing from the other two . I'm glad to see from the answers to this post that I hopefully will get some eggs before next spring .
chickweed
My Omlet ginger nuts were approximately 18 weeks old when they arrived. Like yours, they appeared identical in size. Daisy laid after 3 weeks, but I am still waiting for Lil to lay. I reckon she is around 34 weeks old, she is not yet doing the crouching thing and has a pale pink excuse for a wattle and comb. Definitely not earning her keep !
Avid-Myrtle
I got my 3 on the 21/9 and was told that Penny was older (about 18weeks)then the Pepperpots (about 15 weeks). And indeed she has been laying for 3 weeks or so but the others show no signs. I did think one squatted the other day as I was trying to get her off the eglu roof and into their run but my husband think I am just being hopeful. As there are 3 of us in the house we have to save Penny's eggs up till the weekend till we can use them as they are still quite small ave 50g. the 2 peppers are now a lot bigger then her and but the wattles and combs are still really small so I think I still have a little time to go..... I phone home every day around lunch to ask how many eggs we have....sad I know
KateP
I got my two girls on 22 August and I thought that Roxanne (gingernut) was the eldest as she had a bigger comb but Donnatella (pepperpot) had a growth spurt and was the first to lay an egg on 23 October. We've had lovely eggs from her most days since then. We're still waiting for Rox and although her comb is getting a bit bigger I don't think she will be ready to lay anytime soon! pgainey
Thanks everyone. I was worried that Tango was not getting the right nutrients or something that was slowing her development but I guess she will just mature when she is ready! It's great that this forum is so friendly and responsive, it's like your own chicken encyclopedia! Thanks again,
