New chickens, spend alot of time indoors?

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Two new Chickens 4 days ago. Rose and Martha. Both are doing well.

This is new experience for all the family, and the chickens are spending most of their time inside the Eglu.

They come out to feed and drink and have a little potter around., but then dive back in for cover.

It has been raining loads recently. They are both happy and come out when we got out to them, but wondered will they become more 'outsiders' once they are settled and things dry and warm up?

Many thanks.

It was our 10-year old who named Kochanski - his Dad insisted on showing him his old Red Dwarf videos - which, of course, he loved - and as the only female character is Kochanski, hence 'his' hen got her name

Our 12-year old more predictably named his hen 'Ruby' after the Kaiser Chiefs song.

My niece and nephew are 3 and 5 and said to our younger son "Why did you call your chicken something we can't say??"

Welcome to the forum and to keeping chickens. I'm sure you'll really enjoy the experience and have a great time.

As regards your girls' behaviour - its just what I would do in their shoes (well, feet). When you're in a new place, its cold and p*ssing down with rain, there's a load of strange stuff going on outside, all sorts of upheaval etc. .... Wouldn't you just stay indoors and watch the telly?

Wait until they get used to the set up and it gets a bit warmer - you will find they don't go inside at all except to lay!

What sort of hens are they - any chance of a picture? (we're a nosey lot!)
