Linda
There is a Japanese (I think) method of rearing beef cattle where the cows are fed beer every day and massaged. The meat is supposed to be amazing and the cows very contented. I'd content with a couple of pints and a daily massage Sounds great to me!! Lesley
Two or three of the young cockerels have started to try to crow! It is so funny - they sound just like the klaxons you get at childrens parties They are 12 weeks old now and we're so pleased that we moved before they started crowing - the neighbours would have loved us The two ducks are very noisy - I'm glad we only have two. Mindy lays a big egg every day. The colour has changed from blue to an off white/pale blue. We have found someone who likes duck eggs so we sell 4 a week to him. Carl eats the other 3 or I use them for baking. I don't like duck eggs to eat as boiled etc. I took Mummy cat some s"Ooops, word censored!"s of chicken last night and now she's taken to following me around We sat enjoying the sunset last night and she came and sat by us to keep us company. She had a look at the open front door but didn't go in. The pigs are as happy as pigs in the proverbial - it has rained so much that it is piggie heaven in some places in their paddock. They've made a wallow and now when we go to feed them their snouts are all muddy and their coats are all dusty. The grass is so long that when they lie down we can't see them. I keep thinking we've had rustlers whenever I come back and can't see them We need to start soem board training with them while they are still young - just so that we could move them easily if we should need to. Mel (& Paul)
Lesley - just catching up on all your wonderful posts - its the next best thing to living the dream oneself! I am SO pleased that you got the farm rather than the dreadful camel racer breeders. (& Paul) spent most of the time shouting at the tv when the chap was on (bless him, I dont think he realises the people cant hear him )
Lesley
Glad you still enjoy it. We found the TV thing hilarious - and we're pleased that we have the farm, and not them, as well (even if Sheila's parents think we are the ones with Camels )

motherhen
Do keep posting updates on the farm - it makes me feel all nostalgic - loved the image of the piggies in their muddy wallow And yes, good idea about the board training - you'll be amazed at how quickly the piggies get too heavy to pick up or push around
Lesley
We can't pick them up now Jane - we must be doing something right With all the rain we've had, they've made themselves a lovely wallow. All Carl could see when he was cleaning out all the Eglus today was three pairs of eyes and three little snouts as they watched his every move from the mudbath

Lesley
Well then! - there's always a first time Do I need a reason? The pigs have no scratching posts since the electric fence became active - they were using the fenceposts. They've decided that Carl makes a good scratching post and nearly knock him off his feet
