Sans Shampoo haircare

Recommended Posts

Hello! I think I must be new since you were on last - you're a new name to me :) .

I've been at it 3 1/2 months and am finding it really easy to do!

Does the egg conditioner work well? Do you just whisk it up & use it as is?

I just whisk the egg up and after wetting the hair I gradually put a little on each bit of my head and massage it in for about 2 mins - then rinse it off. It makes the hair really soft and lasts for days.

Just to update, I am still finding that dandruff is the bane of my life, and causes me to have to wash it at least every other day, sometimes every day. :( Obviously I'm still not using shampoo, and it's no worse without the shampoo than with it, just no better. Trouble is, I have to use rosemary oil and a cream I have long used for my scalp before I wash, which is then quite hard to wash out with just water. My hair would be doing so well if it wasn't for my bloomin' scalp.

This one is probably of no interest to anyone other than me, but I heard the other day that wrapping curly hair in a towel causes frizz, so I'm going to try letting it drip dry onto a towel on my shoulders. I have no idea why towel drying should cause frizz, but it's got to be worth a try!

It must be the oil and cream you are putting on your scalp that's upsetting the hair. Can't you try not using those? Once the balance of natural scalp/hair oil has been achieved you will never get drandruff again - at least that's what my husband has found. Good luck!

But the cream and oil help the scalp and it's the scalp that's causing me to have to wash it so often, not the greasiness etc. :? I've been 11 weeks now. Maybe I should just give in and wash it every day, but not use any cream and oil etc, and hope that it eventually sorts itself out. Scrubbing at the scalp every day is usually enough to shift it for a day.

I can't imagine life without the dandruff, but it would be brilliant if it eventually 'evened' itself out.

Sorry to hear about the dandruff :( . I agree, if you can face dropping the cream & oil for a while it might work?

I hadn't heard about the towel = frizz thing :? . I usually put Elvive Perfect Curls mousse on wet hair and leave it to dry. It really flattens my hair down and seems to prevent the frizz forming (not totally, but it makes a difference). I still have to use the straighteners to get it out completely.

I've been at this lark since the beginning of October & I'm still waiting for those silky locks  .

I said I'd report back on the no towel-drying thing (and I'm sure you've been sitting on the edge of your seats waiting! ) So.... I'm not sure if there is less frizz, but it is most definitely curlier. Not sure if that is a good thing though! :? It didn't take as long as I thought it would to dry without wrapping it in a towel first. I just had a towel on my shoulders to pick up the drips for about 5 minutes or so.

It's been 13 weeks now, and I'm going through a greasy patch - am starting to dream of shampoo again, which is not good! I did a bicarb wash with vinegar rinse on Friday, as I was going out with friends, and I think the grease is probably a reaction to that. Don't think I'll use bicarb again, as it really dries the ends out, and especially not if it is going to cause my scalp to pump out grease. I used less than a teaspoon of bicarb, but it's pretty drying stuff.

My usual regime at the moment is a simple one - water only to wash, then vinegar and water instead of conditioner. I've found that white vinegar is just as good as apple cider vinegar.

Anyone got anything else to report? :)

I was just thinking about this thread this morning when I "washed" my hair - hot water only, then conditioner.

I've been going since early October but still get a bit of frizz. I have to use potions and lotions to keep it under control and the hair straighteners once between washes.

Quite happy with it though so intend to keep going :) .

I still get the frizzies too - I wish I could say my hair had changed completely, but the reality is that I haven't told most people about my experiment, and they aren't noticing!:lol: On the flip side, it does make me wonder why I was bothering spending so much money over the years!

I wonder what it will be like when the hair that has never been shampooed grows down (will take years!)

That is exactly what I would have said, word for word, if I was more articulate!

:D Well, I did 10 months of no shampoo, and have been a further 13 months using shampoo but never, never SLES.

My hair is in much better condition than it was 2 years ago. I really wish I had discovered this project in my youth, as the good condition is coinciding with a strange growth of grey.

Of course, the newer hair would be in better condiition than the longer part, but I can actually feel with my fingers that the first 2/3 inches is softer & smoother. There is a point where the texture changes, so SLES shampoo was def. drying it out before.

Can't wait (er, several more years  ) for all the old hair to be cut away & all the length to be "post Project".

I may return to just water when life is calmer, but I don't shampoo more often than 5/7 days.

Well done to all continuing, hope it goes well. :D

That's good to hear and gives me some hope! Although I haven't actually used an SLS shampoo for at least a year (washed it frequently though).

I'm definitely in a hair crisis week. Soooo greasy but still frizzy! Going to try washing it with some diluted lemon juice I think - hope it won't dry the ends too much. I hate being greasy, as the lure of shampoo is becoming almost impossible to resist - particularly as I'm at the 13 week stage, not the initial detox.

I am soooooooo verging on giving up! I chickened (tee hee hee!) out of the lemon juice, but now wish I'd used it. I was washing and washing and washing my hair with water in the shower, and it felt absolutely disgusting. I then started wildly looking around for something to wash it with - the choice was shampoo or sea salt, so I went for the sea salt. Will see what it's like when it dries, but I don't hold out much hope.

I just wish I knew why it had suddenly gone so disgusting this week, as I shouldn't really be in detox mode now - it feels like it did in week 2. Could be hormonal, I guess, so I really mustn't throw all my efforts away, but I hate feeling this icky and grimey! :(

Don't give up Pelicano!

If you're feeling desperate, rubbing oatmeal through your hair can really soak up excess oils. Do this on dry hair, preferably in the garden and brush, brush, brush to remove all the flakes. It'll give you a bit of a lift.

I found that the type of water has an effect. On holiday in Wales for a week and I suddenly had clean, light feeling hair - just rinsing with water, but it was spring water. At home in the southeast, I have hard water with added fluoride  and I have to use something else.

Like Sheila, I did this for about 10 months and now use a Green shampoo once a week. My hair has benefitted enormously from doing this and I am thrilled to be almost chemical free in haircare, skincare and cosmetics as well as food. :D

I used to wash twice a week. I'm not sure that my hair is really much better than it used to be anymore. I am just determined not to wash it more frequently. I do notice though that it turns on about day 4, gets greasy and then dries up a bit - gets better and more bearable.

But, when my feet are dirty from wearing Crocs in the garden (or something normal like that!), showering with just water does not remove any mud. I always have to rub the dirt off, usually with soap. So I'm not quite convinced that my hair should be any different. I would like to know however what people used to do way, way back. Is there a book called 'The History of Hair-washing' do you think?

Yes, I'm having the same thoughts, ie how can water get rid of all the dirt? Although I guess I've never bathed my 2 bunnies, and in theory they should be grubby.... I suppose it depends a bit on how dirty you get your hair regularly, going rock climbing or something where actual dirt would get into the hair on a regular basis. I have this horrible feeling that when I finally give in to washing with shampoo, the water will be black!

I just wish I knew whether this was detox or that I'm just going to stay a greaseball!

I even tried water only on my face for a couple of days, as my face is very very oily, but the clammy feeling was just too horrible to bear!:lol:
