Guest
I can't find the post where I mentioned I'd gone to McDonalds and I asked if their chicken meat was free range and was told "Yes" but here's the reply from them when I raised my concerns about this. If anyone visits McDonalds, I'd like you to ask the same question and if you're told "yes", I'd like you to tell me; 1- which branch of McDonalds it was and 2- the date of your visit and I will feed it back to this guy at McDonalds because my suspicion is this isn't an isolated incident. here's the reply anyway.... Dear Mrs ......... Thank you for contacting us about your visit to our Widnes restaurant. I was very sorry to learn of the series of events that you experienced on this occasion and from your comments I can fully understand your concerns. Clearly the member of staff you spoke to may have been misinformed or had misinterpreted the enquiry you made as we do only use Free Range eggs for our products. This has been taken up with all those involved to ensure this does not happen again. Please be assured we too take our commitment to animal welfare very seriously which is why we work very closely with organisations such as Compassion in World Farming and the RSPCA and have been recognised for our efforts in improving animal welfare. One of these commitments is to sponsor research into providing better conditions for the raising of animals for food and as you may be aware, McDonald's are a core sponsor of the Food Animal Imitative (FAI) which has been set up to develop practical solutions for animal production for food. The FAI work in conjunction with Oxford University and their leading Scientists on Animal welfare and behaviour. At present McDonald's supply of poultry meat for our products is not free range and we would never attempt to mislead on this. However, we are continually investigating ways of improving the welfare of our chicken supply and work being done with the groups mentioned above is a way forward in this. To see more about our chicken products, you may want to visit www.makeupyourownmind.co.uk and see our quality scout visit to the chicken production plant as a report and as a video. Also, there is a quality scout visit to the FAI with interviews. Again, thank you for taking the time and trouble to contact us. Guest
p.s. how the member of staff could have misinterpreted "Do McDonalds use free range chicken meat?" is beyond me!?
Tessa the Duchess
MacDonalds is a no go for me except I have nipped in to use their ladies occasionaly I vaguely remember seeing a documentary yonks ago about how McDonalds were responsible for massive forestry disposal in order to get more grazing for the beef cattle to put in their burgers and how this was affecting the wildlife in the area. They can blah blah about their commitment to compassion in farming all they like, but there is a bigger picture which they seem to ignore Tessa
Guest
p.s. how the member of staff could have misinterpreted "Do McDonalds use free range chicken meat?" is beyond me!? It might be beyond you but many of the "crew" in McDonalds are hardly the brightest are they? I mean the whole McJob thing came about because its considered a terrible place to have to work. Although I do know some bright kids who have student jobs there but they do moan about the full timers being rather thick. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6469707.stm I guess what I'm saying is I could understand how a member of staff, who had been told about free range eggs would think it was free range chicken too, or even have it all confused in their head. lozkate
McDonald's have their uses. It really focusses the mind of a twelve-year-old that, he too, could reach the dizzy heights of chief burger flipper. All school grades improving since the possibility was highlighted! Otherwise, 'donuts served by donuts' could be their next strap line. It might well be from a free range chicken but which bit of the chicken? Best not to ask. I simply avoid. I know they'll never hear my protest but I have better things to do with my time than waste it giving some numpty feedback he/she neither needs nor wants (or has a hope in hell of understanding). Why not spend more time in farmers' markets and local shops telling them how many more people would buy their stuff if they sourced even closer to home!! Rant over and Merry Christmas to all my readers. I'm off to the organic boozer for some free range chat and some very organic alcohol. Incidentally, all alcohol is organic! Go ask a chemist (laboratory type not Boots, they hire from McDonalds reject bin near us). Laters Loz

LOL I have to laugh at the last bit - we queued in Boots today and then mum asked the girl what was good for indigestion, without a word the girl turned around and plucked something off the shelf behind, Mum said "is that good? The girl said "it's £7.99" HUH?? We wandered down to a pharmacy and bought some there. It was £2 and recommended.
Guest
that reminds me, Snowy if you're there, DH got a bottle of magnesium trisilicate on your recommendation today. The girls in the pharmacy were laughing as they'd just bought a bottle each too so must be good stuff AND £1.35 a bottle, bargain!
