Guest
I'd like to say the comments I made about the Crocs and being able to spend money on things like Sky TV just underlines that they CAN afford to buy better food if they make that their choice. Saying they couldn't afford it merely shows lack of thought on their part. No I don't think their children would thank them if they bought expensive food instead of Sky TV BUT other choices benefit only themselves. Trying to lead a healthier lifestyle by improving their diet and giving up smoking might bring HUGE benefits though. I suspect the obesity is due to a poor diet as well as overeating. I do applaud them for helping, I suspect they are among the nicer element on the estate - there may be others who sit back and do nothing at all to help then fancy some free eggs! I don't however like the "I'm a single parent" arguement. Whenever I hear that arguement it gets my goat up as I think it tars us single parents with the wrong brush. OK I have to go now because I was going to watch this live tonight, instead of recording it on my Sky+, my son is in bed, I'm siting alone in my crocs in the dent that my morbidly obese butt has made on my sofa. Acutally now that I think about it I bought this sofa when I was claiming unemployment benefit and my (ex) husband was claiming income support! Oh and we lived on a council estate then too. Guest
OK my first question of the night is Why did they use Chicken wire for the run? Its not supposed to be fox-proof, surely Hugh would have known that. Oh and I think he was very mean not sorting out the shed, those people don't have money to put into the project, just time. Guest
She'll come round. She's digging her heels in because she feels she is defending her position. She was too emphatic in the shed "it's what I expected" TBH she could have seen COWS in that shed instead of chickens and she would have said the same thing. She has a determination not to back down that will crack by the end of the programme. Makes better telly that way.

Martin B
I think I ought to get off my soapbox as well Please don't! I love the open Intensive Farming debates on here! Good to see everyone elses point of view.
Guest
i don't know if budgies and chickens can understand each other but my budgie is visibly distressed whenever he hears the intensive broilers. He starts sqwarking and dashing about his cage, he doesn't normally do that! I know he can understand some of the wild birds as he talks to them when he can hear them but this is different, he seems upset. So there we are! chelsea
now I really think my husband deserves some appreciation from me, (I dont really witness what he does) every night he goes into several of these houses and catches 25,000 between a team of 4 men, with that amonia etc, it must be a really horrible job. Not taking anything away from those poor chooks though.
Guest
hmmm more food for thought. Its getting harder to watch - those poor birds. I had to turn over when he culled that bird. I was glad he took the kids into the sheds as well as their parents - I notice Hayley's kids weren't there. I suspect she is making good television now by holding out so I'm dubious. But I am skeptical. Will I ever eat another cheap chicken - well I didnt' anyway as I've been veggie since I was 11. I will make sure I don't buy any though - cats aren't getting any and neither is James. Mind you for the amount he eats I may as well save my money. Mother is joining me on Lighterlife so she won't be eating any in the near future. My Aunt is having free range chicken tonight after last nighs programme. I keep talkin to the kids at school about it and there are more and more starting to watch. One of them said to me today she didn't fancy it last night but as it seemed important to me she thought she would watch it, her Mum said why are you putting that on and she told her I was passionate about it. Both are now converts.
Olly
hmmm more food for thought. I was glad he took the kids into the sheds as well as their parents - I notice Hayley's kids weren't there. I suspect she is making good television now by holding out so I'm dubious. But I am skeptical. Actually her son WAS there. I do agree with the point you made - she is someone who will fight their corner to the last (bit like some of the contributors on this forum! ) but she couldn't help but be affected by what she saw. It wouldn't make such good tv, nor would it be very realistic, if they all caved in immediately! Back on topic ... it was upsetting to see the sick birds being culled, but that is good husbandry. He doesn't show it, but I bet they do the same on the free-range side, only because of the additional space and better conditions, there are fewer of them. Guest
aaah I stand corrected - she didn't seem too "attached" to the kid so I thought it was someone elses. I know if I took a child of mine in there I'd be holding their hand, shoulder or something. I know the culling in necessary I just don't want to see it. I know it isn't really cruel but it just upsets me to much. Mum wouldn't even watch this programme but then again she turns the animal programmes of if they start killing each other! Guest
funnily enough, the culling isn't upsetting me as much as seeing those poor chickens cheek by jowl, stuffed into that small shed. When they started pecking at Hugh's shoes, for something different to do, I cried. It's just so wrong!
chelsea
she turns the animal programmes of if they start killing each other! I dont do animal programmes either for the same reason....the african lion/crocodile ones are the worst!
