Joojoo
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=726735 What a lot of ignorant, self absorbed people there are in this world. It's bad enough if people can't afford to buy free range because of the cost implications but to happily buy "cheap" meat and say that they don't care what conditions animals are reared in to me is beyond belief. I feel desperately sad after reading that
chickenlover
This is very saddening, since watching hughs program i have vowed not to buy any chicken that is not free range, but i went to tescos yesterday for my weekly shop, i have 4 children and even though we are not on benifits we still have a budget, reality set in when i got to the chicken section , there were NO free range whole chickens and from what i could see there was only a tiny space where they would have been displayed, so i didnt buy one at all, and then on i went to the freezers where the southern fried chicken ect are and the packaging is extremley confusing, so i ended up coming home with no chicken at all , as for there being no free range chicken im hoping that it had all sold out to people that had seen hughs program but tescos has angered me so much we have (hubby included ) decided to buy all our free range chicken/chicken peices from our local butcher and as for southernfried? i will be making it myself. But like the forum convo shows only a small persentage of people are thinking like this
Snowy
But at least it is a discussion, and there are plenty on there saying that they will now change because of it. There are always going to be some that are convinced they do not need to change (20 years ago I was exactly the same and said many of the same things Just look at me now )
Ziggy
Keep hope Joojoo... there will always be people who do not care, it's not possible to make everybody realise that animals should be treated with respect... after all, there are people who don't think twice about killing humans, I'm sorry if that sounds drastic, but it makes one realise that we can never expect everyone to respect chickens... 'they're only dumb chickens' will say some people... but for all the people who don't care, there are a lot who do, and keep trying to make a difference, and a lot of people who didn't care before who get thinking and start caring... The positive point, and advantage, is that it is a 'one way only' conversion... in my experience converting from not caring to caring is the only way round, practically people don't usually go from 'caring deeply for animal welfare' to 'not caring at all'... so every single one of 'them' who gets converted into one of 'us', is a small victory, cause none of 'us' tend to go and join 'their' rank... Tessa the Duchess
I read through the whole thread I got the feeling that some of the more 'awful' posters were just doing it to wind other concerned people up, they are probably the sort of people that organise pit bull fights well maybe that's a bit strong There will always be selfish, toxic people in this world, you just have to learn to avoid them Tessa
bronze
I'm sure I've read somewhere in the past about the correlation in caring for animals standards of life etc with caring about humas=ns. I didnt phrase that very well but does anyone know where I can find anysimilar info?

jomaxsmith
Digital Spy is one of those fora where opinionated people go to wind other people up. Not nice and fluffy like this one. IMO usually their discussions are about whether Britney Spears is a good mum or whatever. I don't think I'd take their viewpoints as typical to your normal person on the street! Egluntyne
I can't keep pace with all these fora. I suspect it is the same people posting the same messages on all of them.
Popcorn
I've just followed the link and I think maybe it's been changed. There was a lot of discussion 'for' free-range chickens. (I might have been looking in the wrong place though) Good on the boys for doing this. They've raised the awareness, which can only be a good thing. Hopefully it will make people think twice before they plonk a chicken in their trolley without a thought to where it has come from. I imagine that the majority of people do care, they just haven't been given the information on how our food is raised.
Guest
I would agree about Digital Spy, there are a lot of people who like to wind up others or show how clever they are. Of course there are also some very helpful posts on there and if you have any digital issues its the tops (I got a fauly out of warranty Sky+ box replaced with a brand new one free of charge thanks to Digital Spy posts). Joojoo
You are probably right about Digital Spy. TBH I'd never come across it before and only found it through a google search on "asda and free range chicken". I agree that there are an awful lot of idiots out there who do take enormous pleasure in winding people up, but I find it very difficult to accept it for what it is when they come out with their ridiculous statements. That said, I WAS heartened by a lot of the people on there, on whom it seems, HFW & the like have genuinely made an impact. At the end of the day if it gets people talking and, just one person makes the switch then it has to be deemed worthwhile. What I find very sad is the number of people who don't have any respect for animals (and very probably humans for that matter). Unfortunately, they always seem to be the ones who make the most noise. I eat meat, I enjoy met and I'm not going to stop eating it, but it's about making sure that the creatures we rear for food are given the best possible life, however short that may be. The one difference watching the programme has made to me is that I shall only be buying meat from somewhere local that I know has slaughtered it onsite. That may prove to be difficult to source - I've got to get my research head on I am also hopeful that my ranting has made a difference to a few people at work who didn't watch the programme. At least 2 have said they will never buy cheap meat again which is fantastic. I think that although we are considered to be a nation of animal lovers, there are some aspects of life in Britain, and I know it's probably far worse on the continent and elsewhere, that I am finding it more and more difficult to accept. This was the headline story in my local paper on Monday - http://www.shropshirestar.com/2008/01/puppies-dumped-in-bottle-bank/ All week on central news they have run stories regarding animal welfare. I watch (albeit with my finger poised over the remote control) and think I've seen it all, only for another horror story to appear. Neglect is one thing - people not understanding what they are taking on but cruelty is something that I will never be able to come to terms with. Sorry - rant over now!
