Battery hen jumpers - ADVICE FROM BHWT PLEASE READ

Recommended Posts

Well I for one am still grateful to little chickadee for sharing the pattern. I've nearly finished one - it's boring plain maroon (not at all exciting or stripey) but I'm pleased with it. I'll keep it for when I get some ex-batts, so I can try it out for myself. However, in light of buffie's post, I won't be knitting any more at present, unless the BHWT change their minds.

I do completely understand the BHWT position though. They just have the safety and welfare of the girlies at heart. :)

I saw these somewhere else recently...

my worry about them is not about wings or legs getting caught - but more basic...

chickens have their own methods for heat regulation. with woolly jumpers on my worry would be that the chicken has no way to lower its temperature and could therefore overheat..

I think Buffy may be right on this one...

I can see there usefulness for a very oven ready girl and I shall still knit mine as I don't now what state my girls will be in, but the thing that I have been pondering on is the issue of preening.

They won't be able to reach the preen gland and won't be able to spread the oil over whatever feathers they have got.

As a short term measure I'm sure it will be useful in certain cases.
