Pinkybijou
I've had my two chooks now for two weeks and they have settled in nicely. They don't seem to eat much though. Should I be worried? I filled up the eglu grub feeder with layers pellets when we first got them (because that's what they were used to eating) and it's only been topped up once. They have been free-ranging a few times in the garden but apart from a bit of grass I haven't seen them munching too much else. We have given them some mixed corn a couple of times, but only late in the day - they absolutely love that (although they leave the large corns). I tried making mash of the pellets today with some raisins and dried mealworms in it, but they just picked out the raisins and mealworms! What do you think? Doris, our Welsummer is still quite small and Dora, our Wyandotte doesn't seem to have grown much. (Neither of them are laying yet, although I did see Doris crouch yesterday.) redbug
I have had my chooks a week also. Filled feeder once still not empty. The first couple of days did't eat or drink much. But now are doing well. Fill a bowl of corn meal worms and raisens etc about 4.00 and they eat all of it. go to bed about 5.30. Sounds about the same as yours. Pinkybijou
Thanks Redbug (diggin' your name too!). Mine are exactly like that, almost like they are holding out for their treats! Mine are lazy bu**ers though and slope off to bed about 4pm...
Egluntyne
Don't worry...as soon as they come into lay their appetites will quadruple!
chelsea
yes agree with Eglutine. Enjoy the "lean" spell while it lasts. There will be no stopping them when they are laying ...they will be tapping on the backdoor! like my lot
redbug
Suppose it like us really then. Making sure we have space for dessert. It's great fun watching them. The first day out I'm sure they did't drink any water. Saw them later on the second day in the glug for ages (thirsty)eventually found. Love the way they drink. Mine are 16wks how old are yours? Pinkybijou
Thanks for all the replies so far - I'm not the only night owl then?! I shall stop worrying and just leave them to eat what they fancy. Pam, I'm not sure how old they are. The old chap I got them from said they were POL, but he had quite a few in his henhouse of differing sizes and couldn't say how old exactly they were I also love watching them, and I like watching my son watching them too - he's absolutely engrossed by them, bless him!
