Guest
do you remember I started a thread about Wirral council banning battery eggs and I said I'd write to my MP to see if our council would ban them too? I got a letter this morning on House of Commons letter headed paper no less! *ahem* "Dear Mrs..... Thank you for your letter dated 17th January 2008. The council is always reviewing its purchasing policies and given the recent publicity about battery eggs, they will in the future be banned from ALL of Halton's schools, staff restaurants and the Stobart Stadium Halton. The move to free range eggs will affect all kitchens in council owned buildings in Halton. Halton Catering Services has always been at the forefront of national initiatives and has on many occasions led by example, the award winning training programme for catering staff is held as an exemplar of good practice. This latest initiative coupled with a Council move to offer fair trade tea and coffee, means schoolchildren, council staff and visitors to council buildings, including the Stobart Stadium are to be fed 'cruelty free' food. Further initiatives under negotiation include Purchasing locally sourced produce Sourcing non battery farmed meat and poultry Reducing food waste anbd packaging to land fill sites ....." It goes on a bit more but those are the important bits. It doesn't specify a date but I'll write them a thank you letter and ask about timescales. It's always worth writing to your MP

Guest
I wrote to our MP a while ago about recycling facilities in our area, to cut a long story short, a few weeks later all the households in our area were given a special bin which is emptied once a fortnight for paper, glass, cardboard, types 1 and 2 plastic and tin cans! Before that we had to cart them to the dump ourselves. I'm not claiming the credit but it was a heck of a coincidence! Our MP is very efficient, he writes back to confirm how he has actioned your correspondance and chases it up if he gets no reply and keeps you updated. He gets my vote every time

Guest
he's Labour Tessa, he's been our MP for 11 years and is very highly thought of in our constituency, he's done a lot for the area and any communication I've had with him has always been very positive. Aaah thought he would be Labour You are lucky to have a good MP, a rarity today methinks. Ours is intensely irritating and is at present trying to pretend to be Barak Obama Tessa

Guest
I hope it will encourage/inspire other people to drop their MP a line, you could quote Wirral and Halton as examples of councils that have taken the iniative!
