Paul
I'm getting my chickens Thursday. Is it too cold at the moment and should i wait for it to get a bit warmer or will they be ok??
Eyren
They'll be fine - have a browse of some of the recent topics here, if you need reassuring! As long as you remember to break the ice on their water in the morning - that's the important thing!
TAJ
I agree - this morning I emptied and refiled the glug at 7 am - when I checked it again at 10 am it had already frozen over! Otherwise they look very happy with the cold, dry sunny days - I think they would complain more if it was wet & windy than cold and sunny. Eyren
I agree - this morning I emptied and refiled the glug at 7 am - when I checked it again at 10 am it had already frozen over! I thawed mine out with boiling water on Sunday morning (whilst the girls were still shut in the eglu) and it still re-froze by 11am Glad to see the weather is due to turn milder later this week... Hen Watch
Bet you can't wait for Thursday to come. Don't worry about the weather, they will be fine. Just think about wrapping yourself up warm, as you will be spending vast amounts of time in the garden hen watching......
Olly
They'll be fine. Mine arrived last year when there was snow on the ground! They probably feel the cold less than we do.
Eyren
Thinking about it this morning, I realised that all the wild birds will be roosting outdoors in this weather, with no eglu to keep them warm - and small animals lose heat faster than big ones! Admittedly some of the wild birds won't make it - which is why it's so important to put out energy-rich food at this time of year - but our hens are snug and warm by comparison
Egluntyne
They cope much better with cold weather up to about minus 10 degrees than they do with hot. The only time I would be worried would be if I had a hen living by itself.......with no one to snuggle up against for warmth. Then I would by a Snugglesafe. Eyren
They cope much better with cold weather up to about minus 10 degrees than they do with hot. I know how they feel! If global warming starts turning the south of England into a Mediterranean-type climate, I will definitely have to move to Scotland
