A solution at last

Recommended Posts

I have a hen (who is supposed to be called Wilma but is always known as Ginger) who has pulled feathers since she was small. A bumper bit worked for a while, but then she learnt to pull feathers despite the bit. She has injured the other hens and drawn blood, and for the last two days she has been in solitary confinement.

We heard of a farm near Oxford that will take any unwanted hens or cockerels and let them free-range, and she went there this afternoon. Ginger will have a wonderful time, much better than she had with me; I will have a better time, because I will stop worrying about the damage she was inflicting; and my other hens will have a peaceful life.

Ginger is on the right, having just met a cockerel for the first time. She doesn't looked too nervous, does she?

I'm glad you found a solution, it's so stressful when you've got a hen that's constantly upsetting things. Such a worry, but what a nice ending you must be pleased and relieved. Is this an excuse for another hen purchase? Of course it wouldn't be fair to try and introduce just one.....
