I think I'm finally having some success with getting my hubby sold on building a run for the girls. At the moment the eglu and run is at the side of the house on the patio, and I'd like a lean-to run built onto the wall.

It would need to be about 3ft wide - any wider than that and it blocks off access. How long do you think it should be to give them enough room? They are in the run until 3.30 during the week, and free-ranging from then (plus out all weekend).

Also, will I need to buy plans, or is this something a competant(ish) DIYer could do easily? I guess I need a stronger mesh than chicken wire to make it fox proof, and does anyone know what it might cost to build?

Sorry if any of these questions are daft, and thanks for any advice - I want to make this really easy so he'll do it!!!

Just have a look on the 'Run inspiration' thread there are some nice ones to copy off on there!

You need weldmesh rather than chicken wire, 19g is OK but 16g is stronger still.

I managed to scavenge some wood for mine, (not started yet) and I have a lot of 4" x 2" in the garage left over from the french doors.

I would look to provide about 3 sq ft per. chook. Basically build it as big as you can and then you can get some more

You can buy off the shelf ones but they are bit more expensive.

I reckon ours will cost about £100 quid for a 12ft x 4ft kind of size, but would probably cost double if I had to buy all the wood new.

Kev.

Cheers Kev, I did a search on runs but it came back with 100s of pages and nothing obvious! I am off to seach on 'run inspiration', I think we'll have to buiy our wood, but hoping it's not too complicated to do as basically it'll be a lean-to.

DH has promised to look into it!
