superjules
These are Yoda and Yaddle, sitting in the cherry tree during their first time out of the eglu run. They're not much to look at yet, but I think they have potential!
chelsea
what a fab picture! I've never seen chooks captured in a tree like that is the tree very high up?
superjules
The run is only 6' high and the tree is totally enclosed in the run. They're probably about 3' off the ground there. I was told that Skylines are active and flighty, I've kept them in the eglu run inside the big run so they don't get beaten up but they were starting to look bored. So I let them out and now they're terrified! At least they're not bored now though! To put it in perspective here's a pic of the run. The tree is in the back right corner. Ain't Nobody Here
I think they look like little sweetiepies - very timid and gentle . It's a lovely photo .
Eyren
Did you say you'd been to Thornes again? They are pretty little things - bet you're looking forward to blue eggs!
Cinnamon
They really are very pretty Jules. I would love one or two myself
superjules
I was going to get a skyline and a maran cuivre but as the skylines are only 80% on the blue egg laying, I thought I'd hedge my bets and get 2. Now I've got to be really unlucky not to get coloured eggs! Not that I'd really mind, but let's be honest, it is kind of why you get skylines, isn't it?! They look so small and skinny next to my Magpie and Silvernick. I didn't realise how much they'd come on til I got the skylines, which are really not that much bigger than my bantams, who had a bit of a go at them! Cinnamon, I've just been looking at your photos. I didn't realise you had a Magpie/pied suffolk?!
Cinnamon
Cinnamon, I've just been looking at your photos. I didn't realise you had a Magpie/pied suffolk?! Errrrrrrrrrr - have I????? Which one is it then?
Jules.
They are lovely, & i have never seen a picture of a chicken in a tree Have you clipped their wings yet?
superjules
They are lovely, & i have never seen a picture of a chicken in a tree Not an everyday sight, but it is a very small tree. None of my others bother to use it, although it's handy to hang their feeder and greens from. Have you clipped their wings yet? I wonder how high they could go if their wings were intact?! Good job the run has a roof! Cinnamon, the one in the group photo looks like my Magpie: Edited March 26, 2008 by Guest

Cinnamon
Cinnamon, the one in the group photo looks like my Magpie: I see. Mine is a Daisy Belle - a Hybrid of some sort Actually,I decided yesterday that grey or black chickens are my least favourites & I much prefer the brown/buff ones, which is why I am so taken with your Skylines & really want a couple of my own
superjules
Sorry Lynn, I'm a technonumpty so I don't know why you can't see them but they're in my gallery just for you.
Phosphorus
Mine is a Daisy Belle - a Hybrid of some sort Sarah - I ummned over a Daisybelle - the breeder that we are going to buy from has them as well What is she like - does she lay cream or brown eggs (I have a feeling my breeder said cream)? Thanks Andrea
Cinnamon
Shes lovely Andrea - not my favourite, but lovely all the same. She is a good layer & her eggs are light brown (as are 4 of my other hens too )
Lynn
Thank you!! They are gorgeous girls. I visited my brother recently (he is living on an organic farm in Italy) and all the chickens roost in the trees at night - over 400 of them It was certainly a sight to see! Phosphorus
Superjules your pictures are lovely - I now have to have a small tree in my run for the girls when they finally arrive What sort of cherry tree is it - it looks lovely Will have to get DH to leave a slab out inside the run so that we can plant a tree there Love your chooks Andrea
superjules
Thanks Andrea - no idea what kind of cherry tree it is as it was here before we were. I never manage to eat any of the fruit on it because the birds come and take it all before it's ripe and I can't pick them earlier because cherries stop ripening the moment you pick them! Ah well, at least the chickens can have them this year! You could put a little tree in a great big wheelie pot if you are going to have slabs. We're going to have the keep the tree very heavily pruned so that it doesn't break through the roof of the run!!
Phosphorus
I have a self seeded tree that has planted its self in one of our flower beds - have been meaning to dig it up. I might try and see if I can move it - it isn't that big yet (branch size) though - the chooks might fall off if they try and roost on it I will have a think. Slabs are not fixed down as yet - and I don't think will be fixed other than the ones on the outside edges. DH will kill me if I buy something to go there from a garden centre though - we have spent hundreds on this run already
superjules
I brought a branch home from the woods yesterday and hung it on chains from the roof of the run. It was like a swing when I put one of the chooks on it, she wasn't at all pleased so I've put it in a corner so that it can't swing about. I found one of the skylines roosting on it last night when I went to check on them. What I'm trying to say is that you can hang branches around in your run and, apart from spending about £3 on chain, it's free! My next project is to make a little ladder type perch thingie from branches tied together. I'd like to make them a platform like Mrs Bertie, but that will involve buying some marine ply from a diy store and if I spend any more money on chooks I'll end up divorced! Phosphorus
if I spend any more money on chooks I'll end up divorced! Tell me about it - we have the slabs down (kind of - not fixed) and the frame up. DH and I went to Wickes yesterday lunchtime to find out about paint, roofing and cement. Looks like we are looking at another £100+ again Could do it more cheaply but DH (me too) want it to look nice in the garden - it is right up against our next door neighbour's fence Branches you say - I have my eye on the lovely pile of branches that are currently massed on are front lawn after DH trimmed the tree in front garden a few weeks ago - they are waiting to be taken to the tip. Need to go and grab a few interesting looking ones. Where did you get chains from?
superjules
Good old Wilkinsons! In the hardware aisle with all the screws and bolts and other fun stuff. I've also got my feeders hanging on more of the same chains, it's great to keep them off the floor so they don't end up with aubiose in them. OH recently finished building my run, we then had to go and spend £40 on corrugated plastic roofing, then another £25 on guttering bits and bobs.... he's not happy! I might have to sell my eglu to appease him!
