Beki
Yesterday i spent almost 3 hours in the kitchen cooking! lol I had... * a free range chicken (small - medium size) * some organic sweet potatoes * some normal white potatoes * 2 tins plum tomatoes * 1 can sweetcorn * 2 vegetable stock cubes * half a bag of red lentils * some curry powder * some broccoli * i bag of multigrain bread mix (and a breadmaker! lol) I made... * 4 large servings of chicken and sweetcorn soup which we had for dinner last night, each with a thick slice of the homemade bread * 4 large servings of chicken curry which we'll be eating for dinner tonight with rice * 4 servings of chicken and broccoli in pasta sauce which i've frozen and will be doing dinner either tomorrow night, or monday How much did it cost me? Your guesses please...
bronze
For each meal? Not much and even less if its homegrown. now go tell that Hayley woman!!!
Beki
Lol.. none of it homegrown unfortunately We only started our veg patch a few weeks ago (hopefully this summer it'll be a different matter tho!) The whole lot - INCLUDING the free range chicken!!! - cost me just over £6.80 The chicken was in the reduced section for £3.71 (original price £4.90) The sweet potatoes were in the reduced section for 10p for the bag (i only used half the bag) Normal potatoes from the farm shop were about 30p Bread mix was about a quid Lentils were about 30p broccoli was about 30p sweetcorn was 20p plum toms 40p and the other spices etc i had in the cupboard, so just added on about 50p for them all together - the veg stock cubes worked out at about 3p each Even if i'd bought things at normal price, the whole lot would have only cost me about £8.70 At just over 50p per meal (or just under 75p per meal if paying full price) who says you can't afford to eat free range?! Now if only people would get it through their heads that you don't have to eat a WHOLE chicken at each meal..

Keanie Bean
Well done that girl You are so right, things can be streached, I manage to feed a family of five(and none of us are exactly small) on around £35 a week. This includes all our toiletries and washable nappies and other household stuff aswell. This forum has definately showed me even more tips on how to reduse reuse and recycle. When we have moved and have our veg patch up and running it will be even better. Sarah.x
Lesley
Well done Beki! You're right - chicken has become so cheap that people do think they have to eat a whole one each
Egluntyne
Well done. It just shows how much further a free range chicken goes as opposed to an Asda 2 for a fiver chicken.
Jules.
When I was little I remember my mum buying chicken from the market every Saturday for our Sunday lunch. That was the only day of the week we ate chicken, as it was expensive, & I'm only talking 30 years ago.
