Puppy walking - Jake & Lexis. Updated 15.11.08

Recommended Posts

Thanks - yes it is cute but will get out of date REALLY quickly :lol: Will have to update again soon we have half a GS - one ear is UP yayyyyyyy  a coouple more pictures added.

Have heard from Jakes traine that he has settled in well - he is being kenneled with a spinoni(sp?)/lab cross. As a pup it looked all lab but now it looks all Spinoni. It is another cross that doesn't shed for those who would like a Guide dog but are allergic to dog hair.

More photos of Lexis, now 11 week old - she is doing so well but she doesn't like the hot weather. However she has to get used to working hot , cold, wet, windy - what ever. Still vocal but fairly quietly  Is enjoying puppy party at the vets on Thursday afternoons. She is of course the best behaved pup there :oops:

It never ceases to amaze me that people think they can't start training or don't try and train their pups from the very first day they have them.

One chap was suggesting that modern training methods didn't work and that he couldn't see why it wasn't acceptable to use a rolled up newspaper to hit the pup to make it do what he wants and to punish it for soiling in doors.:shock:

He and his partner "work full time in very stressful jobs and really haven't got the time" (his words) to train the pup or to spend time with it!!!!! They are surprised that it chases their house rabbit!! Is anyone else surprised - it is a 13 week old sheltie with owners at work all day.

Sorry for sounding off but people like that make me sooo cross. I know not everyone has the time I do because I am older and only work part time.

But why not then wait and buy a pup during their holiday so that they DO have time to train it??!! Two really concentrated weeks would give the pup fighting chance of knowing what they are expecting of it.

Oh well it takes all sorts.

Aww she's gorgeous Maggie! My vets wouldn't let me take Quita to a puppy thing until she was 14 weeks old and then it was at 8pm, so we havn't bothered! I must admit I was shocked at how old she was supposed to be before "training" started officially. She would have driven us to distraction if we hadn't been training her straight away, but I suppose it takes a different kind of person to do puppy walking

Rolled up newspaper  I've found taking her out frequently and doing a "busy" on command works really well for us!!!! How on earth is the poor puppy going to learn to empty outside if they are at work all day when he's tiny? Do they leave it alone with the house rabbit all day? Hmm

I must find my camera and update my thread on Quita :D

The pup party our vets do is for very young pups before they have their second injection. It is a series of 4 where they talk about training!!!!!! feeding, parasites and stuff. I only go for the socialising time they allow the pups which is invaluable when they are too young to go out with the older dogs. I also, usually, find another person with a dog the same age to free run with once a week. Not this time though.

Yes, more pics please

this is EXACTLY the reason that we have a cat, and not a dog.

:evil::evil::evil:

why do people get pets, when they obviously cant / dont want to look after them properly - its a full time responsibility.

sorry, this sort of thing annoys me, some animals have a rough time of it, and all because "she wants a designer dog"

ok, ill shut up, im ranting

I think you are wonderful puppy walking (is that what its called :? )

well done :D

Yes it is called puppy walking, 'though they are thinking of renaming us

A friend of mine who fields calls from prospective volunteers received a call from a woman once who said she could offer Tuesdays twice a month for puppy walking.:lol: Not quite what it is all about!!

New photos in album.

She is now 4 months old and looking like a real German Shepherd, except that everyone who sees her thinks she is a cross because of her unusual colouring  She is really good on the lead and out and about but gets very excitable when people try and stoke her head and fondle her ears  I wish I had a way of indicating BEFORE they launch in that if they stroke her chest or down her back she will remain calm. :) Perhaps I can get a t-shirt made with her picture and a message to that effect.

Does anybody know of a company who can do this? Not tooo expensively.

She's looking so much more grown up than when I saw her Maggie.

We have the same problem with Quita with people lunging at her head and winding her up. We don't get it so much any more though as people don't seem to think she's cute any more because she's not a fluffy baby! (we still think she is though !)

As for the t-shirt - havn't you noticed that people only look at the puppy

Yes people who know me in the town don't even SEE me if I don't have her with me

and another friend when I told her of my t-shirt idea said - not a good idea as the readers would probably think it an invitation to stroke MY chest :oops:

Update on Jake:

His trainer has got him up open riser stairs without treats

So all things being equal he should do fine as that was the only thing that really fazed him. He is in kennels with two other dogs so is blissfully happy with life. Work, friends, food sleep - It's a dog's life.

Lexis is still growing and is turning into a really beautiful dog - lovely temperament and seems to be OK with the chickens most of the time. She has four times got into the run and wandered around eating poo and the hens pellets! The girls don't seem to be too worried by her now, and she hasn't had any of them as a quick snack.

So all is well.

Maggie

Oh boy aren't we all growed up. New pics on Link. She is just over 6 months and such a lovely dog - friendly (a little too on occasions), obedient (well mostly, we have hit the odd bit of terrible teenagers). I really wouldn't mind if she 'failed':shock: but I don't think it's going to happen
