Southport Botanical Gardens

Recommended Posts

hey,

I went to Southport Botanical Gardens for a walk out on Sunday and was really surprised with how they kept the birds they had.

They seemed to have alsorts of birds in horrid cages...obviously couldn't see the inside of where they were living but the outside runs were really dirty and the water in them was in concrete bits on the floor and was brown/green - surely this can't be allowed?

They were all mixed up in cages with the signs saying completely different birds to those that were actually in the cages...there were a few chooks...from what ive gathered from on here there was a pekin, a big fluffy one - poss a cochin? and a few others that i had no idea about.

There seemed to be a lot of bullying going on, i witnessed two turkeys (i think) attacking a little duck, and also eating the eggs of something (not sure if ducks or chooks as i didn't see any chooks in that run.

They had other animals too - rabbits, guini pigs etc and these didnt seem much better - they had s"Ooops, word censored!"s of veg thrown into the run but they were just in dirty puddles and obviously had been there some time as they smelled awful - rotten.

I dont know if just being over sensitive but the conditions just didn't sit right with me! what do you think?

Sorry for going on for rather a while lol

I didn't know about that...what happened there?

I was thinking maybe i should report it or something but just wanted some other opinions as no-one else seemed bothered so I was worried that maybe I was just being over sensitive

I don't think you are being over sensitive at all! But I know what you mean, if others don't seem bothered :? I would ring and speak to the manager or whoever first, follow it up in writing if needs be. These places shouldn't be alowed to keep animals if they are not aware of their basic needs

PLEASE do report them and let me know what happens. We'll pay a visit in a few weeks and see what's happening and if no changes have been made then we'll report it too and will follow it through to the bitter end, that's an absolute disgrace!

If you want, we can meet you there and take some photos of the conditions etc?

anyone else want to come?

OH is from Southport. He and L went to 'the park' last week and took loads of s"Ooops, word censored!"s for the chickens - they felt sorry for them. OH says some had scaly legs too. Don't know if they are the same chickens?

Unfortunately Southport is a bit of a trek or we would join you Poet.

have started a new thread to see if anyone wants to join me and DH, hope some of you can so we can try and do something about improving the living conditions of these birds.

Ok guys well I just called and spoke to Martin and he said he'd go to have a look and see what he could do.

Regarding the mucky pens and dirty water - he is going to inspect it and have a look and see and do what he can and then pass it on to the man in charge of the averies (sp?) as that obviously isn't acceptable and is obviously something which is easy to remedy.

Regarding the eggs left in the pen and being eaten - he is going to see if he can see this happening and sort it out - same with the bullying.

I did get on my high horse and tell him that if he felt it was easy to clean the pens and could sort that then it should also be easy for the eggs to be removed by the same person.

Rabbits and Guini pigs - he blamed the rotten veg on people throwing the food in - i said he could do something about that, there were ways to stop that and it should be stopped because i witnessed a child not throwing food in but throwing an apple at a rabbit and hitting. As for the food being allowed to lay there until it rots and smells is also not acceptable and he agreed and said he'd do something about it.

He said that the pens are inspected so they get a certificate to keep them open - well ok but obviously they wouldn't pass in the condition they are in now so in my opinion I would guess that they clean them out when/if they know that the inspectors are coming.

So it ended up with him agreeing that it wasn't acceptable and he would go to see what he could do - from the fact that he answered the phone and by teh way he was talking I would assume that he usually has nothing to do with the animals but at least he listened and said he'd do something about it.

I was however, a bit worried that he was only saying this to get me off the phone so I informed him that, sorry for my lack of trust but you see things like this too often where nothing gets done, so i would be going back in a couple of weeks (working the next couple of weekends) and if things had not improved IMMENSELY then i would be making a formal complaint to the authorities.

I think I made my point, but im a bit worried that he gave in too easily and really isn't going to do anything!

Sorry for the big long ranting post but just wondered what you all thought of what he said???

thanks

Stacey

Southport was one of my childhood haunts as my Dad is from there and we regularly used to visit the gardens, they were always a bit tatty but I never paid much attentiom and it's years since I've been. Honestly, whatever excuses they come up with they shouldn't be allowed to keep ANY living creatures if they're not prepared to invest time and effort in keeping them correctly. Well done you two, if it wasn't a 3 3/4 hour drive I'd be there too.
