Shanijo
Hi folks can somebody help answer my question. We are awaiting our chooks from omlet which comes with a bag of feed. Does this food contain everything they need or do they need anything extra, i've just been reading a book and it mentions giving the chickens grit or is that in the food that comes with them. I know you can give them treats but we were not to sure about the food. Regards Sharon & Nigel
TheCoop
I'm not sure what Omlet supply (I think it might be layers mash), but it should contain all the stuff they need for good health like wheat, barley oats and maize. When I bought my chooks their first bag of feed (layers mash), I also bought a bag of grit. I fill their feeder whilst sprinkling grit in there also, so they get a mixture of both. Our 3 love apples and plums as a treat and also cooked potato peelings and cabbage, but weren't so keen on brocolli! Hope that helps. Abbey Road Girl
Welcome to Club Omlet, Nigel & Sharon. I too am waiting for Omlet hens (Pepperpots). I think that the feed that Omlet supplies does contain the basics but there seem to be some additions which are recommended. Don't panic, but I'll just bet that Egluntine and others will come up with a big list. All that comes to my mind at the moment is grit, Limestone Flour (good for strong shells) and Chicken Spice! I do believe that Omlet recommends welcoming your girls with Marmite on toast and some plain bio-active yougurt. It will help them with the stress of their big move! Egluntyne
The bag of feed will contain everything you need for starters. We all have out favourite extras and the list goes on and on.....you would bankrupt yourself if you got everything that is available! As the weeks go by I would get: Mixed Poultry grit. I have a pot anchored down in their ranging area to which they help themselves Limestone Flour. Helps with shell formation, bone strength , and assists the muscular contraction involved in egg laying. Poultry Spice. A mineral supplement. Mixed Corn for scattering as a treat. Also: Red mite Powder. Smells divine and does what it says on the tin. Flubenvet....just in case. A metal bin for storing food. (Rats can gnaw through plastic). I hope that helps.
