Guest
A MP3 player for your car? Nope, neither would I, but I bet he would! Err, actually, I bought my wife one for Christmas..... It would be nice if she actually used it too.
AnnieP
grd. Do you know what? I got one for Christmas, and I was temporarily convinced by OH that it was a great present, as I love my rather flash car to bits, (Lotus Elise 111R) love music, and it would enhance the driving experience even more, blah blah. He then proceeded to download all of his favourite stuff onto said device (Dead Kennedys, Neil Young, Smiths etc) and approximately one of my cd's (not even one I'm particularly fond of either), and I haven't had the time or expertise to change it since.... AnnieP
ANyway, back on topic Perhaps I should recycle it? (the MP3 player, not the car). Any takers? A white hen would be fine!
Chicken on a mission
AnnieP, You're not married to my hubby are you? That sounds just like him - minus the flash car When hubby and I first moved in together he changed my pin number so it would be the same as his Not only is this a dumb thing to do in terms of security, but he was also risking his life in mucking about with the way I like things

Guest
I have a theory that all men are clones. No, we just try to get inside a woman's mind to find out what her preference is for gifts. In doing this, we men have to move from rational thought to the female 'irrational' thought. It isn't a smooth transition, so we end up thinking of the practical present rather than the romantic. It's obvious really.

You could be the second person today to imply that Murdo is female, after all nothing that went on yesterday evening was the least bit rational or are you suggesting I've taken over his mind. OOH mind control shall we all try that this evening

Linda
I even tear envelope windows out of envelopes to recycle envelopes I do that!! There can't be many of us
AnnieP
Ah, but do you return junk mail to the sender? I love to use those pre-paid envelopes to send back the shredded application forms. Not recycling, I know, but I like to think of it as "re using" and at least its keeping somebody in the post office and comapny mail room employed. Even better when there's no pre paid and a stamp has to be attached: Don't bother, just make them pay the pound the other end! If we all returned the junk we got sent, maybe they'd stop sending it! Linda
I have done that a few times in the past, but now I have renewed enthusiasm to continue. It's a great idea - keep it up!!
ali-s
Ah, but do you return junk mail to the sender? : ! I do that I mix and match the forms and envelopes. So a Barclaycard form will be sent to American Express and the American Express form goes to Barclaycard. A relative of mine works at a place which sends out this cursed mail and told me they have automatic letter opening machines. Apparently a small amount of bird seed put in an envelope breaks the machines
Guest
I even tear envelope windows out of envelopes to recycle envelopes I do that!! There can't be many of us I asked our recycling collectors about those and they said don't bother. Mind you these weren't the technical boys, just they chaps picking up the boxes. I know increasingly cellulose is being used for the windows so some are recyclable as is. I do send the prepaid envelopes back. Unfortunately we do work for a company to support their 'direct mail' operation. You see it's not junk mail. It's very expensive to send this stuff out (can be as much as a pound a time for some promotions, so they like to make sure it's targetted. So only those people who are likely to be interested receive it. It works too. Sometimes as many of 8% of the people respond (And that's a good response rate !) Happymama
The trick is to become as hard hearted and cynical as he is! I don't do Easter or Valentines because he doesn't. Birthdays are practical occasions too. This is after years of receiving "useful" presents, rather than the romantic ones I craved! We just have to accept that their tiny brains work differently from ours, bless them! after all, would you like to recieve a router for Christmas? A MP3 player for your car? Nope, neither would I, but I bet he would! Sad, but true! Save your money girls, and spend it on yourself! Oh, I WISH! I'm getting him a wireless dongle or card for his laptop for his birthday tomorrow, I'd LOVE a (wireless internet) router, but I've got to buy my own, just like my laptop, to go with it! Missed pressie opportunity, but he doesn't see it like that, does he? I got a black & decker workmate (for him) for my birthday once. Mine's getting me G&B choccie for Easter, I've told him to. Won't tell him what he's getting. Other peope have bought eggs for the children, most of which are garishly coloured and not fit for them to eat (munch munch what diet?). motherhen
I love this idea about sending junk mail back to the sender. I am so fed up with getting credit card applications I just need to come up with some pithy phrase about the importance of recycling and saving trees - then I can print that across each form
Guest
We have just got back from a surprise trip to Brussels. Thanks Dan. (Early birthday treat) Glad to see this thread still running. Yesterday they collected a double load of rubbish and recycling (Due to the Unison strike, we had no collections) Shocked and stunned that still the usual suspects had put no recycling out, I would have thought that after 4 weeks they would have at least a few cans, bottles, newspapers etc. On the subject of returning junk mail back to the senders, just a thought, do you remove your names and addresses, as this is the sort of thing that can be used in identity theft. Everything that comes to us like that, we shred and most can be put in the wormery. We are quite obsessive about shredding everything. Can't be too careful. There are some unscrupulous types out there.
AnnieP
Oh yes, remove your name bit! I often tear it all up into tiny pieces in the vain hope that it will clog up their letter opening machine... Glad you had a good time in Brussels!
Cate in NZ
What a lovely thing for Dan to do..... I hope that you had a wonderful break in Brussels. Did Jules and Harry go to? sorry that was off-topic.... Gina will be coming for mw with her off-topic sign soon...... and I can't think of anything sensible to say about recycling to get it back on topic. Sorry
Guest
Yes Harry and Jules came with us and yes we all had a brilliant, if exhausting time. They were as surprised as I was. I can't believe Dan kept it a secret. PS Keeping on topic, while I was there noticed that Belgium was very clean and also had recycling bins in the street. P PS We went to Parc Asterix in Paris a couple of years ago (fantastic place if you like theme parks), no english people there at all ( good place to practise your french), apart from us, spotlessly clean with loads and loads of places for you to recycle your rubbish. We were amazed that all the teenagers their put all of their rubbish in the appropriate containers Hope this brought us back on topic Gina
motherhen
We were amazed that all the teenagers their put all of their rubbish in the appropriate containers Our Council tried can and bottle recycling bins at one of the corners on our shopping street where the students congregate - they used them alright - they stood in plain view of everyone and peed up against them throughout the evening and night I'me sure you can imagine what the area was like to walk past the next morning

Cinnamon
Doeas anyone know if the council does take plastic, can I recycle those little black plastic pots that plants come in from the garden centre? What about the harder plastic terracotta colour ones too?
PurpleHen
On Tuesday, I phoned my council AGAIN to ask when they are going to do something about collecting recycling (see earlier in the thread for my rant). I had a strange conversation with a women who would only refer to plastic. Anyway - she said they are hoping to collect plastic in the next few months, but that it will certainly be by the end of the year. Her reason for them taking so long to sort this out is that they have to transport it so far Well - when I got home, some of the strange conversation was explained. There was a new brown wheelie bin, that the woman obviously thought I knew about! This bin is for all garden waste and all food waste - including meat and fish. But no man made materials at all. So - at least it's improving, even if it's slow
kannie
It took me five years to persuade Islington to give us a recycling service! They said we're not a 'street front' property, as the access to our house is down a footpath off a busy shopping street, and so we didn't qualify! (Strange how they always managed to collect our ordinary rubbish though...) Anyway, after making a formal complaint they decided that we qualified instead for a 'flats above shops' collection. Which means that we can put all our recycling (paper, cardboard, glass, tins, cans, & plastic bottles) out on any night, as often as we want, in see-through bags that they supply. So, though I'd like a wider range of things to be collected for recycling (bulky garden stuff & plastic wrappers), I am happy with the frequency of collection. Pity it took so long to get it... and why didn't they approach us to offer the service?
