Recommended Posts

Hi We are collecting our 10 rescue girls on Sunday and I need inspiration for names! My husband has suggested tickles and tess but he is very childish! Can you imagine getting the names mixed up and shouting in the back garden for them  ! What would the neighbours say  !! All ideas greatly recieved! Clare x

Once you have a theme it's a lot easier.

Our first 2 were the always popular flower names - marigold and daffodil. We have got some star wars names thrown in (Yoda and Yaddle because they'll lay blue/green eggs!) and we were going to have the three little maids from G&S Mikado, but only Yum-yum stuck. The others were named after their breed (Magpie and Sylvie who are a pied suffolk and a silvernick) or characteristics (Bossy and Bumble).

Have a look at some Omleteers signatures. Plenty of inspiration to be found there.

Someone....can't remember who....has some hens after A Midsummer Nights Dream characters. Peaseblossom, Mustard Seed, Cobweb etc. Lovely.

There are food themes, TV characters, chefs, Jane Austen characters.

Plenty to go at.

Have fun choosing!

old-fashioned girls names are popular, possibly because for some reason chickens running down the garden always seem to look like elderly matrons in a hurry to get to the cake-stall! So you could go for Ethel, Hilda, etc.

It'squite nice to have a theme though, as you've got ten to name - flowers (Poppy, Rose, Pansy etc.) Or female singers? (Dusty and Sandy would seem quite appropriate - ooh, and Eartha!) but you could have Billie, Edith, Cilla, Kylie, Amy - huge choices there.

What about female heroines - or childrens books, someone on here has named theirs after the 'Four Marys' which I loved reading when I was young.

What fun! Three of mine came to me ready-named, so I haven't had a chance to choose. You can really have fun with ten!

Thanks for your ideas! I must admit I do like old names and love Hilda as one! My favourite show as a child was Basil Brush and had thought about Gerty (she lived at number 30 and was dirty you know!). I also like Henny and Penny as my little girl (2 next week) will find those easy to say. We have two guinea pigs with flower names buttercup and primrose so possibly more flowers? My little boy (8) likes Sarah and Jane or Martha but thats a Dr Who thing! Our eldest daughter(9) hasn't got a clue but is just terribly excited! So many names, so few chickens! Clare x

Ours went through 3 name changes before we found ones that stuck. I was originally going to have a spice theme going - ginger, coriander, nutmeg, saffron, cinnamon, paprika etc, but the boys said no!

So I started on my 2nd choice of old ladies names, but as you can see, the boys sabotaged that as well !

I think you'll need more than 10 names, once you have your chooks, some names just won't suit - others you'll know straight away - my Elsie was Elsie from the minute she stepped into the coop

I chose names with either Hen or Egg in them. Henrietta, Henny-Penny, Eggna, Eggwina I also had an extra Hena that was not used because we have 4 girls. I could only think of 3 names with Hen so went with 2 of each.

You need to choose a theme spices Ginger, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Pepper,

or perhaps herbs Thyme, Rosemary, Sage, Dill, Lovage, Chive, Tarragon

Maybe flowers Rose, Daisy, Clover, Buttercup, Lavender, Poppy, Violet etc.

or like mrsm_jones named after food with chicken in it. Gem stones Ruby, Pearl,Garnet What are your interests? Pick something you like and see if you can come up with 10 names from that good luck and do let us know what you decide.

My daughter named one Ginger after Ginger in Chicken Run. Omlet got named after, well, Omlet!

My son named his Snowdrop as she is pure white - hence he wanted something with "Snow" in it. I keep calling her Snowbell though (mixing up Bluebelle with Snowdrop).

Mine is called Margot - after the Good Life character. My kids were all - "Margot! Yuk! Awful!" I almost relented and called her Amber (she's an Amber Star), but then kept to Margot.

Now they say: "It's a good name. She's soft, and the name is soft sounding."

Anyway - of all those names - Omlet gets the most comment. My daughter's teacher said, "What's the other one called? Scrambled!"

I had chosen 3 names for the ex batts I was going to adopt, but it doesn't look like I will be getting any now. The names I chose were chosen from the things the hens had been denied whilst being caged.

Sunshine

Breeze

Sky

others could be

cloud

Rainbow

Misty

Storm

S"Ooops, word censored!"ing the bottom of the barrel of ideas (10 is a lot  )

Drizzle

Windy

Shower

The last three names are truly awful :lol:

I'm not getting any in the forseeable future because Scottish battery hens farmers will not negotiate with the BHWT

The Scottish BHWT coordinator could rescue over 700 hens (that was the number he told me over two months ago so It could very well have gone up by now) , he has a list as long as your arm of folk in Scotland wanting to adopt the hens.

It is such a shame :( I wish a rescue down South could transport some ex batts up over the border, I would be willing to travel

Loads of great suggestions  but Egluntine's Strictly Come Dancing stars mustn't be forgotten (cockerel wd be: Anton du Beak).

When I was going to have three, I thought of Chekov's Three Sisters (Olga, Masha and Irina), but felt that Eastenders had really distinct characters for chickens: Shirley, Heather and Tanya came to mind first (I think someone here already has Roxie and Ronnie). But you could easily get ten names.

When I decided four was an even better number than three, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme were tempting (easy to call) but seemed too close to baked, boiled, stewed and fried.

Film stars? Greta, Gertie, Bette, Lauren, Lana, Ingrid, Judy, Sophia, Debbie, Jessie, Anna, Ginger, Tallulah, Elsa, Doris, Ida, Bea, Esther...

Oh well, I didn't really have to get to the Post Office before it closed!

What, none of them?:evil: Why on earth not, I wonder? I'd often wondered what the situation was in Scotland - I knew there was a BHWT co-ordinator but no more than that.

You said you were "going to adopt" - did something change?

Sorry for hijacking this post - I'll shut up now :wink: .
