How much sunshine do hens need?

Recommended Posts

Where our chooks are at the moment is very convenient in a part of the garden that was previusly disused. However it only gets patchy

sunshine in the morning until 12pm. The rest of the day it's in the shade.

I'm not sure whether to keep them there and put on a pvc roof which may block more light out or build a run (which would be smaller) and position it where they would get more sunshine. OH doesn't want the garden to look 'like an allotment'!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still dithering about!!!! :?

I don't know the answer on this one.

But the Omlet guide and other info I've read says chickens need "daylight hours" to lay eggs but doesn't specifically mention sunshine. So I guess if your chickens are laying OK at the moment in their current shady position and this suits your garden layout, you could stick with it.

Sure someone else will know the exact answer though.

ours are in a partly shaded area in the corner of the garden under a cherry tree. I dont like to keep my girls in direct sunshine, and I have several omlet shades in my walk in run aswell.

My girls free range a lot so really they pick themselves when they want sunshine - usually afternoons on a sunny winter/spring day (like today) and in the summer they usually keep to the shade. :)
