h&schickens
New to hens...Only had them 12 days and I was worried that when they started crouching, I would not recognise they were doing it!! This evening 2 crouched when I went to pick them up!! I know what crouching is now and know that my 1st egg is not too far away!! After crouching started, how long did everyone have to wait till 1st egg?? I have 2 supermarket free range eggs left and vowed I will never buy another, so please give me some idea how long I should expext to wait!! Thanks Sarah Edited April 23, 2008 by Guest

HRC99
The last of my girls finally popped an egg out. A whopping 64g which is bigger than any of the others have managed even after a month. She was sort of crouching for about a week. We thought she was copying the others but a bit half-heartedly. Then at the weekend she really crouched and five days later.... FruitandNutCake
Two of mine were crouching since I got them on Sunday, but one more than the other. So. 5 days later, I have my first attempt at an egg. Just found a squashed flat, soft shell, whilst cleaning out the sleeping quarters after letting them out. It kind of looked a bit like a flat bit of plastic! So hopefully they should start getting better. I was told that they would just lay them anywhere to start with! meezers
My Margo crouched for a g e s ! Out of the 3 laying at the moment , she was the first to crouch, but the last to actually lay ! almost 2 weeks I think. Pepper, I think, has decided to do it the other way around - I think she layed her first soft shelled egg yesterday, but hasn't crouched until today - when she did a little half crouch thing an hour ago ! They obviously haven't read the books !
FruitandNutCake
This afternoon my Dinks did a full squat as soon as I walked near her! I've bought a bale of straw and started making nest boxes around the run, but I noticed their sleeping hutch now has two nest shape hollows in each corner -would the chickens do this - or was it my rabbits playing a joke on me?
