Please sign this petition: vets charging for prescriptions

Recommended Posts

I received an email today from Pharmacy 4 Animals saying "We would like to take the opportunity to ask you to sign a petition with regards to Vets charging for prescriptions.

A petition to the Prime Minister to maintain the ban on Vets charging for prescriptions has been set-up and will be closing on the 8th August 2008 -

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/petprescription

The aim is to make people aware:

There has been a three year moritorium on vets charging for pet prescriptions This was done to create competition and lower the price of prescription medicines for animals. If the moretorium ends the Vets will go back to charging up to £15 for writing out a prescription and negate any potential savings and maintain their monopoly. This is the reverse of the MMC recommendations."

Please would you pass this information to on your family and friends so that they may have the opportunity to sign it.

Thank you

:? I'm slightly confused ... I've never had a prescription from a vet, normally they dispense the drugs themselves anyway. I'm not sure that, if they did give a prescription, I would know where to go to get them.

Afraid I don't understand quite what this is about. I've not noticed anything different over the last three years with my vet (apart from the fact that prices go up and not down!).

Ah - hang on, light is dawning. Is Pharmacy 4 Animals by any chance a company that dispenses animal prescriptions?

I think that it's all about where you go to get your pets medication.

You can take a prescription from your vet to your pharmacy as most drugs are the same, but up until three years ago a vet could/would charge you for just having a script to take elsewhere, instead of getting the medication from them (which they in turn make a HUGE mark-up on)

The three year period is coming up and this company relies on it's customers being able to send a script to them for dispensing. If vets charge a fee to write a script people are more inclined to have the vet dispense but this is often very expensive.

Molly cut her pad a few years back, the vet said he'd give us something to bathe it in daily. We didn't know what it was till it was paid for and we got home. We were charged £6.50 for a 100ml bottle of Hibiscrub. Joe can buy that at work for £3 for 500ml!!

Will be interesting to see what happens ......

A few years ago the vet prescribed Metacam for my dog's arthritis, from the vet it cost around £70 per bottle  I found that I could get it online for about £44 per bottle. So I used to get a prescription from the vet (for free) and then get it online using the prescription. So I think that is what this is all about.

Never £70 a bottle nor even £44 - we charge the largest bottle £29.15 Somewhere there is a large very large rip off

It's making more sense now, I've never had a prescription from a vet -most times it's been something like antibiotics which need to be administered immediately, not the sort of thing you can wait for.

I can see if you have a pet with a long-standing condition then you might want to source things elsewhere, I've just never come across it.

Really? Doesn't surprise me, you should see the car my vet drives :shock: I did search online and £44 was the cheapest I could find. Oh well,

the dog is treated homeopathically now, much cheaper and more effective :D

Hi - Ive signed the petition as my cat suffers from an intermittent runny eye and so I had to keep going back to the vets everytime - he charged me £25 plus for the consultation each time.

So I asked if I could have a repeat prescription instead of keep taking him back each time. They agreed and so I have to keep antibiotic eye drops in the house in readiness. T

he vet charges 9.50 for the drops so I went to the pharmacy and asked them for the same drops - they said they could supply them at a fraction of the cost but I needed a private presciption. When I asked my vet practice for the presciption they said I had to bring my cat back in for a consultation before they would consider it. So they have you over a barrel either way!

Just a thought to bear in mind that by taking a veterinary prescription to your local pharmacy they may be able to get some drugs but not all due to supply contracts.

You will probably have to pay the pharmacy for a dispensing fee, but this is set at the discretion of the pharmacy. For info Lloyds Pharmacy is a minimum £4.00.

I thought I'd point out this out so any cost savings can be properly worked out.

If using an on-line pharmacy they should be able to provide you with the registered Pharmacist's RPSGB number and their registered RPSGB number too. They can be checked using http://www.rpsgblist.org/membership.asp - this is the regulatory council meaning they are at least qualified to dispense. The Pharmacy4animals one checks out ok if you have used them before ;)

Hope this helps

There are online pet medication suppliers and they are a lot cheaper than vets, my cat Lily has an overactive thyroid and has to have a Felimazole tablet daily, my vet charges me £39.99 for 100 tablets and yet if I pluck up the courage to ask for a prescription  I can get 100 tablets for £19.99!

My cousin and her husband (they're Dutch & live in Holland) are both vets and say that if they could charge there what vets charge in the UK they would be very rich

£17.74 up here in our practice!!! You need to have a consultation every approx 6 months for most medications and for eyes and ears perhaps more often as some medications can make eyes worse.
