Problems with location of Glug

Recommended Posts

When my Cube arrived and the guy set it up for me, he put the Glug on the right hand side of the run and the Grub on the left hand side.

I found it REALLY difficult to actually reach in an get the Glug in and out because of the weight and as some of the girls don't really like it, they tend to jump up on a nearby perch I installed and drink from the top. Of course this means that the water gets really mucky so I try and empty it out every couple of days.

To make things easier, have now put the Glug just above the entrance door which means I don't struggle getting it in and out - BUT it is starting to distort the mesh.

where do you all keep your Glugs in the Cube and how full do you keep them? I really am thinking of not using it at all and getting something else - with summer coming up I don't want the girls to run out of water - but I just about break my arm trying to reach in and get it in and out from the side.

My hens are quite happy drinking from it from the bottom, so it doesn't get too dirty, but yes it is difficult when full or even partly full to yoga into the run to grab it... to fill it, I use a hose through the bars, which limits the number of times I have to take it out.

I don't have an omlet run so have installed my glug on a radiator hanger on the run mesh - my girls have ignored it totally. However I was paranoid that they wouldn't use it on Saturday when they arrived, it was so hot I bought a standard drinker for them as well. They just use this.

I don't know if this would be any easier for you and it does pick up bits in it - I am changing the water in it daily anyway as they are drinking a lot at present :D

I know what you mean - I've hung mine above the door as well, but it is distorting the mesh slightly. I hang mine empty and then fill with a watering-can through the bars, as it's so heavy and a couple of times I dropped it and spilled the lot.

I've tried everything to get mine to use it, but as far as I can see they have never drunk from it. It's very frustrating, I think I'm going to have to get another more traditional drinker, or buy a couple more of the standard Glugs

I sit mine just inside the run on the floor but attached to the mesh. I fill it with tap water in a watering can now after reading somewhere that rain water from a water butt may harbour horrid things. That way a full glug isn't pulling on the mesh.

I have to say I hate my glug, it's always filthy as they kick stuff in it!! When my new run is built I'm buying the new style nipple feeding water glug so they can't kick stuff in it.

AJuff, the ordinary Glug can be hung on the run - I did that when I had my Eglus, and it wasn't a problem at all. It's not as heavy as the Superglug, which is what was mostly being referred to above. They still manage to get muck into it, I don't know how, but you should find it a bit cleaner if it's hung up.

Some people's hens seem to take to the Superglug immediately - I have tried everything I can, and just can't get mine to use it.
