henny penny
I'm giving the girls layered mash (not the pelleted form )-the powdery one. does anyone else add anything like garlic powder chicken spice to theirs?
tenzin
No i don't , just add some warm water and if you want to spoil them a drizzle of honey .
Christian
I add limestone flour for strong shells and poultry spice in the winter or if they are moulting.
tenzin
limestone flour is good if they dont have grit or oyster shell ect , as long as theres plenty of grit around they shouldn't need the Limestone flour though , TBH i would always let the hens scratch around for natural things like that . Egluntyne
I disagree Tenzin...often the grit is not enough. They can begin to leech calcium out of their bones to make the egg shells and may go on to develop stress fractures. Also calcium is needed for the muscular contractions required to push the egg along the laying tackle. Not enough calcium can result in very big eggs forming and getting stuck. Limestone flour is pure calcium carbonate and very readily absorbed. I would always have some to hand.
Gamebird
I feed layers mash with limestone flour and a little bit of water to bind it altogether.
Egluntyne
I add any of the following: sweetcorn, raisin or sultanas, chopped cooked veg, limestone flour, garlic powder, bokashi bran, probiotic yoghurt. It looks so appetising!
chickenlickin
Where do you get limestone flour from, and how much would you add? Thanks.
Laura & CTB
You can get limestone flour from any horsey type shops. It's available on ebay too. I add a spoonful to the mash along with garlic powder. My girls also have a seperate bowl of grit and oyster shell.
Egluntyne
Where do you get limestone flour from, and how much would you add? Thanks. Equestrian supply shops or Ebay (much smaller amounts - sold for reptiles). I add between a dsp and a tbsp per grub every time I fill it. jomaxsmith
I feed it as their main food, dry (it goes sour if left wet) and add garlic powder, limestone flour, bokashi bran and occasionally a bit of Poultry Spice or Diatom. My Coral occasionally surprises me with a softie even with access to limestone flour and grit so I don't think it hurts to give it to them.
