1st grade school teacher had twenty-six students in her class. She presented each child in her classroom the 1st half of a well-known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb. It's hard to believe these were actually done by first graders. Their insight may surprise you. While reading, keep in mind that these are first-graders, 6-year-olds, because the last one is a classic!

children's imaginations are something that should be nurtured. Too many people would say "oh don't be silly, the real answer is......" but I love the way kids think.

 

Roger McGough talks about it in his autobiography, his child said to him one day... (upon seeing a candle burning down)....."look daddy, the candle's crying". I'm paraphrasing here as I can't find the bit in the book.

 

Isn't that wonderful! Imagination is a wonderful thing, shame it can be knocked out of children at such an early age.

 

I've just received Roger McGough's collected poems in the post this morning, I shall sit in the garden later with the girls and enjoy some of them I expect

"I have this theory that all children are poets before they go to school, where they are taught how to see the world in a rational and adult way. Making links between seemingly unconnected objects, they can animate the inanimate with ease, but formal education very often succeeds at the expense of the imagination. I'm thinking of examples from my own kids: Finn on watching a lighted candle on the table, the wax melting down the side, 'Ah, the candle's crying.' Tom, looking up at the new moon, 'Look, a bit's fallen off the moon.' Matt in pain, charging into the house with a splinter in his finger, 'Daddy, daddy, the wood's bit me' I wish Isobel had been the girl on the train at Didcot who pointed at the huge cooling towers and cried, 'Ooh, look, a cloud factory.'"

 

 

It goes on but I think that's a nice sentence to end the quote on, it's a brilliant read if anyone's interested

My DS, when he was about 2, had a good one. When told he was a star by Grandad he replied "I can't be a star, I don't have any pointy bits!"

The things kids say really can be wonderful... I keep thinking I should write down all the stuff my four come up with, to remember when they are older, then I think I'll remember but I do forget unless something suddenly reminds me...

My eldest was in a squabble once with my second, and when told off, pointed her sister had done something wrong to start with... to which, very cliche-like, I replied 'two wrongs don't make a right'...

Very calmly, coolly (is that a word??) and confidently, she replied 'No, but three rights make a left'.
