I wouldn't worry too much, it's very early days. My ex batts squawked loads to start with and I was very worried about the neighbours' reactions, but no one said anything. It calmed down after about a week. Then it started all over again when I put them in with my original hens 6 weeks later, and that lasted a couple of weeks! But they will calm down.

my ex-batts were noisiest during the first week, I think they sqwarked every time a cat went by. They are quieter now and only make a fuss about one of the local moggies. But I admit I do still worry about noise in general / neighbours - although as a lot of people point out, they are much quieter han kids and even dogs, and as they go to bed in the dark, mine never make a peep during the eveinine.

do they only make noise when they see or hear you coming?

For example, ours get shut into their coop at dusk and let out at 7.30am. When they hear us at the back door, coming to let them out, they do make a noise which stops as soon as we let them out. If we're a few minutes late in letting them out they also make a row sometimes. Occasionally they'll start earlier than normal but that doesn't happen often.

We put their food and water out just before we open the coop door so they have something to eat and drink immediately.

As has been said, it's early days so if you're making sure they have plenty of food and water as soon as they 'get up' then they're probably just settling in.

Hope your neighbours are tolerant, perhaps a little word to reassure them it won't last forever might be a wise move? Maybe take them a box of eggs to butter them up too ;)

It's the thing that I get most worried about with my hens. Sometimes Agnes squarks for no apparent reason.... I thought it was that we were letting them out a bit late but now we leave the eglu door open so they can let themselves out when it gets light. I wonder whether it's just her way of saying "good morning". They were a lot worse when I first got them.... on the first morning a local cat showed some interest and they made an awful racket!

I'm sure they will settle down. You don't say what time in the mornings?

Are you getting a first light wake up call? - I had that last summer and I had to resort to shutting the eglu door at night and opening it at 7am.

Or is it when they first see you in the mornings? Maybe they associate you with food and are squarking to get your attention.

Good Morning!

Well i let them out at 8.00 - i know its quite late coz i would rather let them out 7.00- 7.30. But I hoping the neighbours are up after 8.00 & getting ready to go!

I really do not have aclue why the squark in the morning- this is when they are out the eglu. I have food & water ready. Hopefully they will get bored lol. Though this morning they were squarking in the eglu at 7.30! only lasted 5 mins  lol

Do you think its wirth going to my neigbours & asking them?

Thank you all for the responses, its great here! x x x

Hi

It may be because everything is very new to your exbatts and their sqwarking is only an alarm call. It will settle down when they have worked everything out especially as their routine has changed from what they are used to.

Mine will alarm call say for instance when its windy and the trees rustle but it settles when they realize there is nothing dangerous near them.

Or birds flapping in the trees, someone sneezing in another garden, a cat jumping on the fence.

Anything will set them off but as they become used to it all they will quieten down.

Also when they are noisy in the eglu its because they think they should be up but if you open the door at the same day every day they will get into a routine. Mine dont make a noise until bang on 7.00am.

As to the neighbours I think personally I would wait and see if any one approaches you. This is what I do and I will discuss it with them if and when it happens. Only my opinion though.

Hope this helps

Nette
