My mother's coming to stay!!

Recommended Posts

My MIL has never visited us up here - she doesn't like me anyway. My Mother is a wipe a finger along the mantlepiece type  but she doesn't visit too often and has come to realise that I just don't have time to have a show house ( not with a 7 year old and a OH who leaves stuff laying around)

This thread has made me smile ... my mum was not a tidy person, she hated cleaning and believed her time was better spent on other things. It would be fair to describe the house where I grew up as 'chaotic'. If we got home from school and she'd had a tidy up, the immediate question was 'Who's coming?'

My former MIL, on the other hand, verged on the obsessive - not a speck of dust anywhere, and bleach used on everything. Bless her though, she was lovely to me and never once commented on my housekeeping, although I must have been a sad disappointment as a DIL!

I try and steer a course somewhere between these two extremes. 'Lived-in' is about right, feels fine to me!

I don't fuss about cleaning and tidying when Mum comes to visit.

Mind you since we lost the key to the door between our houses she comes in about 100 times a day!

She NEVER even uses her own front door!

Someone on here once said "No-one ever lay on their deathbed wishing they'd done more cleaning"

I've never forgotten it and remind myself of it frequently!:lol:

I'm liking the idea of signs to put up at the front door as people arrive.

I never bother doing a mega clean if my mum is coming (about once a year normally) and her house is always filthy anyway - but she's happy I guess

We try to keep it relatively tidy, the cleaner keeps on top of the everyday and we go through the rooms now and again - Joe's been washing the walls and skirting off all the downstairs rooms, but they do look better for it.

When I lived at my parents, the only carpet that could be seen was the bit where the door opened, I lived in a right mess, but like a nice tidy house these days - why is that :? I think it was because my brother used to nick anything that wasn't nailed down, and if it was tidy I wouldn't realise what I wanted was missing until I went to get it, whereas when everything is a mess I could tell if he'd been in my room ;)

xx
